Press release

Number of marriages up by 23.9 %

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) provisional data show that 4 137 marriages were registered in the first six months of 2025, which is 797 marriages or 23.9 % more year-on-year. Mortality continues to decline and has fallen by 4.8 %. Natural population change remains negative, with 5 660 children born during the period.

In H1 2025, 4 137 marriages were concluded, showing a year-on-year increase of 797 marriages or 23.9 %. June saw the highest number of marriages – 1 132 (up by 160 or 16.5 %), while January recorded the lowest number – 466.

The number of deaths totalled 13 077, showing a year-on-year decline of 661 or 4.8 %. Moreover, only April and May recorded more deaths year-on-year (up by 4 each), all other months had fewer.

The number of births declined, with 5 660 children registered (down by 863 or 13.2 % year-on-year). May had the highest number of births (985), while February the lowest (881). The number of deaths exceeded the number of births twice, and natural population change remained negative.

On 1 July 2025, Latvia provisionally had a population of 1 million 830 thousand, which is 26.5 thousand people fewer than on 1 January 2025. The population decline is linked to the early-March expiry of long-term visas and residence permits issued to Ukrainian civilians, as well as a reduction in the number of births.

Methodological information

The methodology for processing provisional data is available in the official statistics portal reference metadata section Fertility and mortality.

Deaths – the provisional number of deaths in the respective month. To produce annual statistics the data are specified by supplementing the number of deaths with people the death whereof was registered after the national registration deadline (six working days) as well as usual residents of Latvia who passed away while temporarily abroad.

Live births – the provisional number of live births in the respective month. To produce annual statistics the data are specified by supplementing the number of births with children the birth whereof was registered after the national registration deadline (one month) as well as children born to usual residents of Latvia while temporarily abroad. The children born to parents who are not citizens of Latvia and do not have usual residence in Latvia are excluded from the number of births.

Provisional population – the population at the beginning of each month, calculated by adding the number of live births and subtracting the number of deaths during the month to/from the previous month’s provisional population, as well as taking into account recorded migration movements.
The population at the beginning of the year is determined using the population estimation method. Each May, the figures for the beginning of the year and for all subsequent months are revised based on the updated population estimate.
