Data description
Data on population fertility and mortality provide information on number of births (in breakdown by sex, age of a mother, ethnicity, marital status of parents, etc.) and number of deaths (in breakdown by age, sex, ethnicity, citizenship etc.).
Statistical concepts and definitions
Statistical unit
- Number of births and deaths;
Statistical population
Children born to parents at least one of which is usual resident of the Republic of Latvia and children born abroad to mother (usual resident of Latvia) while temporarily away.
Deaths of usual residents of Latvia registered in the Republic of Latvia and abroad.
3. Institutional mandate
Legal acts and other agreements
REGULATION (EU) No 1260/2013 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 20 November 2013 on European demographic statistics.
4. Accessibility and clarity
On-line database
5. Comparability
Comparability - geographical
EU births, fertility and mortality data
Eurostat publishes the number of live births by characteristics of the mothers (mother's age, marital status, citizenship, country of birth) or of the child (sex and birth order). Fertility rates and mean ages at childbirth and at first child are also published. Information on legally induced abortions in each country can also be found. The number of deaths are available by characteristics of the deceased (for example citizenship, country of birth, region of residence etc.). Information on infant mortality (both at national and at regional levels) and late foetal deaths (at national level) is also available.
Length of comparable time series
As of 2000, based on the methodology of the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat), children born abroad to mother (usual resident of Latvia) while temporarily away are included in the number of births in Latvia.
As of 1991, data on infant mortality are presented based on the World Health Organisation Methodology that slightly differs from the methodology used prior.
6. Coherence
Coherence- cross domain
There are two sources on the number of deaths:
- Demography statistics (calculated by the CSB) and
- Statistics on causes of death (calculated by the Centre for the Disease Prevention and Control - CDPC)
CDPC compiles data only on cases where the cause of death is stated in the medical certificate that has been issued and received at the CDPC.
Coherence between provisional data calculated by CSB and CDPC
Once a month CDPC publishes provisional monthly data on latest month and adjusts all previously published data.
The CSB publishes provisional weekly data on the number of deaths once a month. Published data are not recalculated until the 2nd quarter of next year, when the annual population estimate is made.
Coherence between the final data calculated by CSB and CDPC
The CSB recalculates the provisional weekly and monthly data in May of the following year, and the final data also include data on persons who are included in the population estimate (usually resident population of Latvia) and died while staying abroad temporarily, as well as on persons whose death has been registered after the publication of provisional data for the reference period.
In cases when missing person is declared to be dead after longer period of time or initially unidentified body is recognised after longer period of time, the data on the cause of death (by CDPC) are corrected, however demographic data (by CSB) already published are not recalculated.
7. Statistical processing (data source etc.)
Source data
Data on population births and deaths are acquired from the System for Registration of Civil Status Documents. The system is a common information system allowing to register civil status in any registry as well as continuously ensures availability of topical and reliable register information in any registry.
Data collection
Information is acquired with a full-scope survey. It means that sampling method is not used to produce demography statistics.
Data compilation
Full-scope survey allows publishing statistics in breakdown by each administrative territory of Latvia, which is not possible with sampling method.
