Marriage number gone up by 31.9 %

Central Statistical Bureau provisional data show that 1 417 marriages were registered in Q1 2025 – 343 marriages (31.9 %) more than in Q1 2024. Moreover, each of the three months recorded more marriages than the same month in 2024. In January, 466 marriages were concluded (55.3 %, or 166, more than year ago), February followed with 467 (24.9 %, or 93, more), and March with 484 (21.0 %, or 84, more).

In the first three months of this year, 2 756 children were born, which is 398 children (12.6 %) fewer than in Q1 2024 when 3 154 children were born. However, 985 births in March exceed the figures recorded in January (881) and February (890).

Mortality in Q1 2025 was lower than a year before – 6 870 deaths were registered, which is 513 deaths (6.9 %) fewer than in Q1 2024 (7 383).

On 1 April 2025, Latvia provisionally had a population of 1 million 847 thousand, which is 15.3 thousand people fewer than on 1 April 2024.

Final statistics for the population of Latvia on 1 January 2025 will be released on 2 June 2025.

Deaths – the provisional number of deaths in the respective month. To produce annual statistics the data are specified by supplementing the number of deaths with people the death whereof was registered after the national registration deadline (six working days) as well as usual residents of Latvia who passed away while temporarily abroad.

 

Live births – the provisional number of live births in the respective month. To produce annual statistics the data are specified by supplementing the number of births with children the birth whereof was registered after the national registration deadline (one month) as well as children born to usual residents of Latvia while temporarily abroad. The children born to parents who are not citizens of Latvia and do not have usual residence in Latvia are excluded from the number of births.
