Data compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSB) show that, compared to September 2021, in September 2022 manufacturing output¹ dropped by 1.7 % (according to calendar adjusted data at constant prices). Output downturn was registered in electricity and gas supply (production of electricity in hydro power plants and combined heat and power plants as well as gas distribution to consumers) – of 26 %, while output upturn in mining and quarrying – of 6.6 %. Total industrial production output fell by 3.7 %.

Compared to September 2021, output declined in all three sectors having the largest share in manufacturing – manufacture of wood and of products of wood and cork, except furniture (by 5.7 %), manufacture of food products (2.3 %), and manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment (10.1 %). Reduction was also observed in manufacture of machinery and equipment not elsewhere classified (of 22.2 %), manufacture of paper and paper products (16.4 %), repair and installation of machinery and equipment (12 %), and manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (6.2 %).

Output rise, in turn, was recorded in manufacture of beverages (of 26.5 %), manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (18.4 %), manufacture of textiles (11.8 %), and manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products (10.3 %).

Over the nine months of this year, compared to the corresponding period a year ago, industrial production output increased by 1.5 % (according to calendar adjusted data at constant prices). Output in manufacturing went up by 3.6 % and in mining and quarrying by 2.1 %, whereas in electricity and gas supply there was a drop of 14 %.

Compared to August 2022, in September 2022 manufacturing output (according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices) rose by 0.5 %, while output in electricity and gas supply reduced by 13.5 % and in mining and quarrying by 2.7 %. Total industrial production output fell by 0.9 %.

Manufacturing turnover²

Compared to September 2021, in September 2022 manufacturing turnover increased by 13.2 % (according to calendar adjusted data at current prices). Turnover on the domestic market went up by 20.1 % and in export by 9.9 % (of which by 21.4 % in euro area and by 1.5 % in non-euro area).

Compared to August 2022, in September 2022 manufacturing turnover grew by 3.5 % (according to seasonally adjusted data). Turnover on the domestic market went up by 2.8 % and in export by 3.9 % (of which by 5.8 % in euro area and by 2.2 % in non-euro area).

The data published may be specified during the upcoming months if additional information is received.

Methodological explanations

¹Industrial production output is calculated by summing the self-produced products sold and industrial services provided during the respective month with the change in stocks of finished products and work in progress. The industrial production (volume) index describes changes in the volume of industrial production during the reference period in comparison with the base period. The index is estimated by recalculating the production output indicator at constant prices with the help of producer price indices.

² Industrial turnover covers the self-produced products sold and industrial services provided during the respective month. Industrial turnover index characterises monthly changes in demand for industrial goods and services on the market. It is calculated at current prices without excluding price influence. Unlike industrial goods that also include unfinished goods and goods in stock, turnover only includes the goods sold and industrial services provided.
