In 2021, retail trade turnover grew by 2.5 %

Calendar adjusted data at constant prices compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in 2021, compared to 2020, retail trade turnover grew by 2.5 %. Turnover of retail sale of food products increased by 0.1 %. Retail sale of non-food products, except for retail sale of automotive fuel, increased by 3.0 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 6.3 %.

In December 2021, compared to December 2020, retail trade turnover, according to calendar adjusted data at constant prices, grew by 8.3 %. Turnover of retail sale of food products increased by 1.0 %. Retail sale of non-food products, except for retail sale of automotive fuel, increased by 16.2 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 4.4 %.

Compared to December 2020, the most significant increases in turnover were in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (by 62.8 %), retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (by 43.8 %) and retail sale of hardware, instruments, construction materials and sanitary equipment (by 17.7 %). Turnover of retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores decreased by 2.6%.

The total retail sale turnover at current prices, not taking into account seasonality, increased by 18.1 %.

In December 2021, compared to November, retail trade turnover, according to calendar adjusted data at constant prices, grew by 7.2 %. Turnover of retail sale of food products increased by 0.3 %. Retail sale of non-food products, except for retail sale of automotive fuel, increased by 14.2 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 5.4 %.

Compared to the previous month, the largest turnover growth was observed in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (by 68.9 %), retail sale of hardware, instruments, construction materials and sanitary equipment (by 30.7 %) and retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (29.1 %). The largest turnover drop was registered in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (by 17.6 %).

In December 2021, compared to November, retail trade total turnover at current prices, not taking into account seasonality, grew by 22.1 %.

Data published might be revised in the following months if additional information will be obtained from enterprises.

According to methodology of the survey, data on the total net turnover of enterprises also include transactions outside main activity. In some cases these transactions (e.g., wholesale trade) may significantly affect turnover changes in the sector. Total turnover, according to the main activity of enterprises, also includes income from e-commerce.
