Retail trade turnover grew by 1.0 % in May

Calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, compared to May 2023, in May 2024 total retail trade turnover increased by 1.0 %. Turnover of retail trade in food products fell by 0.5%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 0.8 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – by 4.5 %.

As compared to May 2023, the largest turnover rise was registered in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (of 26.0 %), retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (12.3 %) and retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialised stores (8.0 %). Turnover drop was registered in retail sale in non-specialised stores selling mainly non-food products (of 25.1 %) and retail sale in stalls or markets (11.2 %).

Total retail trade turnover at current prices increased by 4.7% (not taking into account the calendar influence).

Compared to April, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises in May 2024 rose by 0.3 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 0.2%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 0.3 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel by 0.2 %.

As compared to the previous month, the most notable turnover growth was registered in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (of 12.9 %) and retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (4.6 %). The largest turnover drop was registered in retail sale in non-specialised stores selling mainly non-food products (of 4.8 %) and retail sale in stalls or markets (3.2 %).

Compared to April, in May 2024 the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) increased by 7.1 %.
