In 2023 retail trade turnover fell by 2.1 %
Calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, compared to 2022, in 2023 total retail trade turnover decreased by 2.1 %. Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 3.5 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) decreased by 2.3 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel increased by 1.3 %.
Calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, compared to December 2022, in December 2023 total retail trade turnover rose by 1.1 %. Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 1.2%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 2.9 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel reduced by 4.4 %.
As compared to December 2022, the largest turnover rise was registered in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (of 26.6 %), retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (13.7 %) and retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialised stores (10.3 %). Turnover drop was registered in retail sale in non-specialised stores selling mainly non-food products (22.6 %), and it was affected by the change in kind of primary economic activity of separate enterprises. Turnover declined also in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (of 4.0 %) and retail sale of hardware, instruments, construction materials and sanitary equipment (2.9 %).
Total retail trade turnover at current prices increased by 0.6 % (not taking into account the calendar influence).
Compared to November, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises in December 2023 rose by 0.1 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 0.8%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) reduced by 0.4 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – increased by 0.2 %.
Compared to the previous month, the most notable turnover rise was recorded in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (11.5 %). The largest turnover drop was observed in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (of 8.0 %), retail sale in non-specialised stores selling mainly non-food products (4.8 %) and retail sale in stalls or markets (4.6 %).
Compared to November, in December 2023 the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) increased by 11.5 %.

Data published might be revised in the following months if additional information will be obtained from stores.
According to methodology of the survey, data on the total net turnover of enterprises also include transactions outside main activity. In some cases these transactions (e.g., wholesale trade) may significantly affect turnover changes in the sector. Total turnover, according to the main activity of enterprises, also includes income from e-commerce.
