Value of exported goods rose by 13.9 % in April
Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) provisional data show that in April 2026 Latvia had foreign trade turnover of EUR 4.13 billion, and at current prices it was 12.6 % higher than a year ago. Value of exported goods increased by 13.9 % and of imported goods by 11.4 %. In April, Latvia exported goods in the amount of EUR 1.94 billion, but imported – in the amount of EUR 2.19 billion.
Compared with April 2025, foreign trade balance has improved as exports in total foreign trade amount increased from 46.4 % to 47 %.
Whereas, compared to March this year, the exports value went up by 5 % ,but the imports value – fell by 2.4 %.
During the four months of this year foreign trade turnover of Latvia at current prices reached EUR 15.01 billion – EUR 589.1 million or 4.1 % more than in the corresponding period of 2025. The exported goods were valued at EUR 6.94 billion (up by EUR 146.9 million or 2.2 %) and imported goods at EUR 8.07 billion (up by EUR 442.2 million or 5.8 %).
Please note that the statistics for foreign trade in goods is presented at actual prices and calculated based on the goods value in euro, not the physical amount or quantity.
Data on January, February, September, October 2025, and January 2026 have been revised.
Calendar and seasonally adjusted data show that, compared to April 2025, in April 2026 the exports value at current prices went up by 12.9 %, but the imports value – by 10.5 %, whereas, compared to the previous month, the exports value went up by 9.1 %, but the imports value – by 3.4 %.
Main changes in exports in April 2026, compared to April 2025:
- exports of mineral products up by EUR 157.3 million or 83.5 %;
- exports of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment up by EUR 35.2 million or 14.5 %;
- exports of prepared foodstuffs up by EUR 29 million or 18.5 %;
- exports of wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal up by EUR 16.8 million or 6.6 %;
- exports of vehicles and associated transport equipment up by EUR 13.9 million or 13 %.
Main changes in imports in April 2026, compared to April 2025:
- imports of mineral products up by EUR 146.5 million or 72.5 %;
- imports of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment up by EUR 47 million or 12.5 %;
- imports of prepared foodstuffs up by EUR 16.7 million or 9.6 %;
- imports of vegetable products up by EUR 11.8 million or 13.5 %;
- imports of vehicles and associated transport equipment up by EUR 7.9 million or 3.8 %.
The main exports partners in April were Lithuania (16.7 % of total exports), Estonia (11 %), Germany (6.4 %) and Sweden (5.2 %), while the main import partners were Lithuania (21.8 % of total Latvian imports), Germany (11.5 %), Poland (10.8 %) and Estonia (8.9 %).
Year-on-year exports to the USA rose by 56.9 % and comprised EUR 59.3 million. The upturn was driven primarily by increased exports of mineral products, which rose by EUR 29.4 million. Imports from the United States increased 2 times and was valued at EUR 55.6 million. Also rise in imports was mostly affected by the increase of EUR 30.9 million in imports of mineral products.
The rise in exports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation in April 2026, as compared to April 2025, was mostly facilitated by an increase in exports of motor gasoline by EUR 71.9 million. In turn, drop in exports of dairy produce, birds' eggs, natural honey in April 2026, compared to April 2025, was mostly affected by a decline in exports of unsweetened milk and cream by EUR 7.7 million or 37.4 %.

The rise in imports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation in April 2026, compared to April 2025, was mostly facilitated by an increase in imports of natural gas and diesel oil by EUR 58.3 million and EUR 47.8 million, respectively. In turn, the decrease in imports of articles of iron or steel was mostly affected by a decline in imports of metal structures and parts thereof of EUR 5.5 million or 34.9 %.

In April 2026 foreign trade balance of Latvia was positive with 126 partner countries, as exports value of goods exceeded imports value of goods, and foreign trade deficit in the trade with 38 partners.
In April 2026, compared to April 2025, share of the European Union countries in total exports value decreased by 2.7 percentage points, but in total imports value– by 0.9 percentage points. The share of CIS countries reduced by 0.8 percentage points in exports and by 0.3 percentage points in imports.

In April 2026, compared to April 2025, exports to Russia increased by 10.6 % and comprised EUR 89.4 million. The rise was mainly driven by the upturn in export of prepared foodstuffs (mainly of spirits) by 92.4 % or EUR 25.1 million. In April 2026, compared to April 2025, imports from Russia decreased by 34.3 % and comprised EUR 5.1 million. The main cause of imports decline was import of the chemical and allied industries, which fell by EUR 2.4 million or 79.9 %. Compared to a month before, imports from Russia increased by 30.5 %, which was mainly affected by the increase of EUR 1.8 million in imports of prepared foodstuffs (mainly of preparations of a kind used in animal feed).
In April 2026, compared to April 2025, exports to Ukraine decreased by 21.1 % and comprised EUR 27.9 million. The drop was mainly affected by the decrease in exports of optical instruments and apparatus by EUR 2.1 million or 63.2 %. Imports from Ukraine fell by 28.3 % and was valued at EUR 15.3 million. The main cause of imports decline was import of the chemical and allied industries, which fell by EUR 3.3 million or 74.8 %.
In April 2026, compared to April 2025, exports to Belarus decreased by 22.4 % and was EUR 10.6 million. The drop was mainly affected by the decrease in exports of optical instruments and apparatus by EUR 1.8 million or 42.3 %. Imports from Belarus reduced by 77.6 % and was valued at EUR 1.8 million. Fall in imports from Belarus was mostly affected by the drop in import of products of animal or vegetable fats and oils by EUR 5.1 million.

Methodological information:
Starting with the data on 2024, Latvian exports include businesses exporting goods from Latvia to third countries through other EU countries where they have filled in export customs declarations for the export of goods to third countries. In April 2026 the value of these transactions comprised EUR 6.4 million or 0.3 % of total exports.
