In January Latvia exported goods in the amount of EUR 1.58 billion

Provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in January 2026 Latvia had foreign trade turnover of EUR 3.32 billion (at current prices 7.5 % lower than a year ago), of which value of exported goods reduced by 6.6 % and of imported goods by 8.3 %.Compared to the previous month, the exports value went up by 3.9 %, but the imports value went down by 5.7 %. In January Latvia exported goods in the amount of EUR 1.58 billion, but imported in the amount of EUR 1.75 billion. 

Compared to January 2025, foreign trade balance has improved slightly as exports in the total foreign trade amount increased from 47.0 % to 47.4 %. Please note that the statistics for foreign trade in goods is presented at actual prices and calculated based on the goods value in euro, not the physical amount or quantity.

Data on January, February and October 2025 have been revised.

Calendar and seasonally adjusted data show that over the year (in January 2026 compared to January 2025) value of exports reduced by 4.7 % and of imports by 5.7 % whereas, compared to the previous month, the exports value went up by 1.7 %, but the imports value by 1.8 %.

Lithuania remained the largest destination for goods exported from Latvia in January – with a share of 20 % – and Estonia came second with 12.5 %. Germany followed at some distance with 7.3 %, and Sweden with 5.9 %. Lithuania (20.4 % of total Latvian imports), Germany (10.5 %), Poland (10.4 %) and Estonia (10 %) were the main import partners.

Year-on-year exports to the United States reduced by 59.8 %, and was valued at EUR 20.2 million. The decrease was mainly affected by the drop in export of wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal of EUR 13.9 million or 85.2 %. Imports from the United States increased by 73.7 % and was valued at EUR 34 million. Rise in imports was mostly affected by the increase of EUR 11.2 million in imports of mineral products.

Year-on-year data show that the rise in the exports of vehicles and associated transport equipment was boosted by growing export of vehicles for the transport of >= 10 persons, which went up by EUR 5.6 million. In turn, fall in exports of cereals was mostly affected by drop in export of wheat and meslin by EUR 20.2 million or 33.8 %.

Year-on-year data show that the rise in the imports of machinery and mechanical appliances was boosted by growing import of turbojets, which went up by EUR 10 million. In turn, reduction in imports of iron and steel was mostly influenced by drop in imports of pig iron and spiegeleisen in pigs of EUR 28.8 million.

In January 2026 foreign trade balance of Latvia was positive with 109 partner countries, as exports value of goods exceeded imports value of goods and foreign trade deficit in the trade with 57 partners.

In January 2026, compared to January 2025, share of the European Union countries in total exports value increased by 9.4 percentage points, but in total imports value fell by 0.4 percentage points. The share of CIS countries reduced by 0.6 percentage points in exports and by 2.2 percentage points in imports.

In January 2026, compared to January 2025, exports to Russia decreased by 18.5 % and comprised EUR 63.2 million. The drop was mostly affected by downturn in exports of textiles and textile articles by 41.0 % or EUR 6.8 million. In January 2026, compared to January 2025, imports from Russia decreased by 91.3 % and comprised EUR 3.3 million. Decrease in imports was mainly affected by the drop in imports of base metals and articles of base metals of EUR 29 million or 99.3 %.

In January 2026, compared to January 2025, exports to Ukraine fell by 18.0 % and was valued at EUR 23.5 million. The downturn was mainly driven by a 43.2 % and 34.8 % reduction in exports of textiles and textile articles and plastics, rubber and articles thereof, respectively. Imports from Ukraine fell by 35.1 % and was valued at EUR 14.2 million. The main cause of imports decline was import of the chemical and allied industries, which fell by EUR 6.7 million or 87.4 %.

In January 2026, compared to January 2025, exports to Belarus higher by 41.6 % and comprised EUR 6.3 million. The upturn was mainly affected by the rise of EUR 1 million in exports of products of the chemical and allied industries. Imports from Belarus reduced by 77.2 % and was valued at EUR 1.9 million. Fall in imports from Belarus was mostly affected by the drop in import of products of animal or vegetable fats and oils by EUR 5.7 million.

Methodological information:

 

Starting with the data on 2024, Latvian exports include businesses exporting goods from Latvia to third countries through other EU countries where they have filled in export customs declarations for the export of goods to third countries. In January 2026 the value of these transactions comprised EUR 5.5 million or 0.3 % of total exports.
