Value of exported goods rose by 2.7 % in December

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) provisional data show that in December 2025 Latvia had foreign trade turnover of EUR 3.37 billion, and at current prices it was 1.4 % higher than a year ago. Value of exported goods increased by 2.7 % and of imported goods by 0.3 %. In December Latvia exported goods in the amount of EUR 1.52 billion but imported in the amount of EUR 1.85 billion.

Compared to December 2024, foreign trade balance has improved as exports in total foreign trade amount increased from 44.4 % to 45 %. Please note that the statistics for foreign trade in goods is presented at actual prices and calculated based on the goods value in euro, not the physical amount or quantity.

In 2025, the foreign trade turnover of Latvia at current prices reached EUR 42.73 billion – EUR 2 198.7 million or 5.4 % more than in 2024. The exported goods were valued at EUR 19.54 billion (up by EUR 698.1 million or 3.7 %) and imported goods at EUR 23.19 billion (up by EUR 1 500.6 million or 6.9 %).

Data on September 2025 have been revised.

Calendar and seasonally adjusted year-on-year data show that the value of exported goods at current prices fell by 0.9 %, and that of imported goods by 3.6 %. Month-on-month data indicate an increase of 3.3 % in the value of exports and a decrease of 3 % in the value of imports.

In December main exports partners were Lithuania (19.7 % of total exports), Estonia (12.3 %), Germany (5.5 %) and United Kingdom (5.3 %), Lithuania was also the leading trading partner for imports – with a share of 20.1 %. Germany followed with 12.5 %, Poland with 11 %, and Estonia with 10.5 %.

Year-on-year exports to the United States reduced by 44 %, and was valued at EUR 27.9 million. The decrease was mainly affected by the drop in export of wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal of EUR 15.4 million or 86.4 %. Imports from the United States increased by 93.3 % and was valued at EUR 26 million. Rise in imports was mostly affected by the increase of EUR 8.9 million in imports of mineral products.

Year-on-year data show that the rise in exports of articles of iron or steel was boosted by growing export of metal structures and parts thereof, which went up by EUR 3.1 million or 23.5 %. In turn, fall in exports of wood and articles of wood, wood charcoal was mostly affected by drop in export of oriented strand board (OSB) by EUR 8.1 million or 66.3 %.

The rise in imports of iron and steel in December 2025, compared to December 2024, was mostly facilitated by an increase in imports of flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel by EUR 24.1 million. Reduction in imports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation was mostly influenced by drop in imports of motor gasoline by EUR 57.9 million.

In December 2025, as exports value of goods exceeded imports value of goods, foreign trade balance of Latvia was positive with 116 partner countries and foreign trade deficit in the trade with 47 partners.

The year-on-year share of the European Union countries in the total value of exports increased by 4.2 percentage points and in the total value of imports decreased by 2.1 percentage points. Share of CIS countries in exports rose by 1.1 percentage point, but in imports – fell by 0.6 percentage points.

In December 2025, compared to December 2024, exports to Russia higher by 15.3 % and comprised EUR 70.5 million. The rise was mostly affected by upturn in exports of textiles and textile articles by 58.8 % or EUR 5.5 million. However, a decrease in exports was observed in the following commodity groups: products of the chemical and allied industries (down by EUR 2.1 million), machinery, mechanical appliances and electrical equipment (down by EUR 1.2 million). In December 2025, compared to December 2024, imports from Russia higher by 4.5 % and comprised EUR 27.7 million. Imports growth was mainly affected by the rise in imports of iron and steel by EUR 20.6 million. In turn, imports of mineral products during this period fell by EUR 14.2 million. Compared to a month ago, imports from Russia increased by EUR 23.3 million, and it was also affected by the rise in imports of iron and steel.

Exports to Ukraine fell by 2.1 % and was valued at EUR 34.1 million. The downturn was mainly affected by the reduction of 32.6 % or EUR 2.1 million in exports of products of the chemical and allied industries. Compared to a month ago, exports to Ukraine was promoted by the increase in exports of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment and prepared foodstuffs of EUR 8.2 million and EUR 7.2 million, respectively. Imports from Ukraine fell by 26.9 % and was valued at EUR 16.6 million. The main cause of imports decline was import of the chemical and allied industries, which fell by EUR 8 million or 85.6 %.

Exports to Belarus higher by 98.1 % and comprised EUR 13.3 million. The upturn was mainly affected by the rise of EUR 2.5 million and EUR 2.4 million, respectively, in exports of products of the chemical and allied industries and prepared foodstuffs. Imports from Belarus reduced by 75.6 % and was valued at EUR 1.9 million. Fall in imports from Belarus was mostly affected by the drop in import of products of animal or vegetable fats and oils by EUR 4.8 million.

Methodological information:

 

Starting with the data on 2024, Latvian exports include businesses exporting goods from Latvia to third countries through other EU countries where they have filled in export customs declarations for the export of goods to third countries. In December 2025 the value of these transactions comprised EUR 7.9 million or 0.5 % of total exports.
