Value of exported goods rose by 8.8 % in September
Provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in September 2025 the foreign trade turnover of Latvia amounted to EUR 3.83 billion, which at current prices was 11.3 % larger than a year ago, of which the exports value of goods was 8.8 % higher, but imports value of goods – 13.5 % higher. In September Latvia exported goods in the amount of EUR 1.73 billion, but imported in the amount of EUR 2.09 billion.
As exports in the total foreign trade decreased from 46.4 % in September 2024 to 45.3 % in September 2025, foreign trade balance worsened. Please note that the statistics for foreign trade in goods is presented at actual prices and calculated based on the goods value in euro, not the physical amount or quantity.
In the nine months of this year, Latvian foreign trade turnover at current prices reached EUR 31.86 billion, which is EUR 1 843.5 million or 6.1 % more than in the corresponding period of 2024. The exported goods were valued at EUR 14.57 billion (up by EUR 613.9 million or 4.4 %) and imported goods at EUR 17.29 billion (up by EUR 1,229.7 million or 7.7 %).
Data on June 2025 have been revised.
Calendar and seasonally adjusted year-on-year data show that the exports value at current prices went up by 5.3 %, but the imports value value– by 10 %. Month-on-month data indicate a decrease of 0.8 % in the value of exports and increase of 6.6 % in the value of imports.
In September 2025, compared to September 2024, exports rise was observed in all main commodity groups:
- exports of vehicles and associated transport equipment up by EUR 22.8 million or 27.7 %;
- exports of vegetable products up by EUR 21.3 million or 12.4 %;
- exports of live animals and animal products up by EUR 19.7 million or 25.4 %;
- exports of wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal up by EUR 15.6 million or 6.6 %;
- exports of base metals and articles of base metals up by EUR 14.2 million or 15.4 %.
Also in imports in September 2025, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, increase was observed in all main commodity groups:
- imports of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment up by EUR 50.4 million or 14.5 %;
- imports of vehicles and associated transport equipment up by EUR 39.6 million or 22.5 %;
- imports of products of the chemical and allied industries up by EUR 28.8 million or 14.6 %;
- imports of mineral products up by EUR 26.5 million or 11.4 %;
- imports of vegetable products up by EUR 19.2 million or 23.6 %.
In September main exports partners were Lithuania (17.3 % of total exports ), Estonia (10.8 %), Germany (7.1 %) and United Kingdom (5.6 %), whereas the main import partners were Lithuania (21.3 % of total imports), Poland (10.8 %), Germany (10.8 %) and Estonia (9.1 %).
Year-on-year exports to the United States reduced by 2 %, and was valued at EUR 35.1 million. The drop was mainly affected by the decrease in exports of optical instruments and apparatus (inc. medical), clocks and watches, musical instruments by EUR 3.8 million or 61.4 %. Imports from the United States increased 4.2 times and was valued at EUR 69.3 million. Rise in imports was mostly affected by the increase of EUR 19.9 million in imports of mineral products.
The rise in exports of dairy produce, birds' eggs, natural honey in September 2025, compared to September 2024, was mostly facilitated by upturn in exports of unsweetened milk and cream by EUR 4.4 million or 26.2 %. However, downturn in the exports of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages was caused by reduced export of spirits, which fell by EUR 5.1 million or 11.5 %. Month-on-month data show that the rise in the exports of wheat and meslin comprised EUR 85.7 million contributing to the growth of the cereals during this period.

The year-on-year growth in the imports of pharmaceutical products was driven primarily by the increased import of put up medicines – of EUR 19.2 million or 30.6 %. However, downturn in the imports of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages was caused by the decline in import of sparkling wines – of EUR 3.8 million or 43.5 %.

In September 2025 foreign trade balance of Latvia was positive with 122 partner countries, as exports value of goods exceeded imports value of goods and foreign trade deficit in the trade with 46 partners.
In September 2025, compared to September 2024, share of the European Union countries in total exports value increased by 3.6 percentage points, but in total imports value fell by 1.7 percentage points. The share of CIS countries reduced by 0.8 percentage points in exports and by 1.7 percentage points in imports.

In September 2025, compared to September 2024, exports to Russia higher by 1 % and comprised EUR 86.6 million. The upturn was affected by the increase of EUR 7.9 million in exports of products of the chemical and allied industries. However, a decrease in exports was observed in the following commodity groups: prepared foodstuffs (down by EUR 4.4 million) and textile materials and textiles (down by EUR 2.5 million). Imports from Russia fell by 84.4 % and was valued at EUR 4 million. Reduced supply of goods from Russia was caused by reduced import of mineral products, which went down by EUR 19.7 million or 99.4 %. In September 2025, compared to the previous month , imports from Russia increased by 18 %, it was affected by the rise of EUR 0.5 million in imports of prepared foodstuffs.
As compared to September 2024, exports to Ukraine fell by 17.9 % and was valued at EUR 24.4 million. The drop was mainly affected by the decrease in exports of optical instruments and apparatus (inc. medical), clocks and watches, musical instruments by EUR 1.4 million or 95.2 %. Imports from Ukraine fell by 10.8 % and was valued at EUR 20.6 million. The main cause of this decline was import of the chemical and allied industries, which fell by EUR 3.4 million or 50.6 %.
As compared to September 2024, exports to Belarus decreased by 30.9 % and was valued at EUR 9.6 million. The drop was mostly affected by downturn in exports of pulp of wood, paper and paperboard and articles thereof by EUR 2.5 million. Imports from Belarus reduced by 67.6 % and was valued at EUR 3.3 million. Decrease in imports from Belarus was mostly affected by the drop in import of products of animal or vegetable fats and oils by EUR 1.3 million.

Methodological information:
Starting with the data on 2024, Latvian exports include businesses exporting goods from Latvia to third countries through other EU countries where they have filled in export customs declarations for the export of goods to third countries. In September 2025 the value of these transactions comprised EUR 6.3 million or 0.4 % of total exports.
