Value of exported goods rose by 2.5 % in August
Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) provisional data show that in August 2025 Latvia had foreign trade turnover of EUR 3.31 billion, and at current prices it was 0.3 % higher than a year ago. Value of exported goods increased by 2.5 %, but of imported goods reduced by 1.6 %. In August Latvia exported goods in the amount of EUR 1.54 billion, but imported – in the amount of EUR 1.77 billion.
Compared to August 2024, foreign trade balance has improved slightly as exports in total foreign trade amount increased from 45.5 % to 46.5 %. Please note that the statistics for foreign trade in goods is presented at actual prices and calculated based on the goods value in euro, not the physical amount or quantity.
In the first eight months of this year, Latvian foreign trade turnover at current prices reached EUR 27.99 billion, which is EUR 1 412.7 million or 5.3 % more than in the corresponding period of 2024. The exported goods were valued at EUR 12.81 billion (up by EUR 451.5 million or 3.7 %) and imported goods at EUR 15.18 billion (up by EUR 961.2 million or 6.8 %).
Data on May 2025 have been revised.
Calendar and seasonally adjusted year-on-year data show that the exports value at current prices went up by 6.7 %, but the imports value value– by 2.6 %, Month-on-month data indicate an increase of 4.4 % in the value of exports and a decrease of 3.8 % in the value of imports.
Main changes in exports in August 2025, compared to August 2024:
- exports of mineral products up by EUR 20.1 million or 20.8 %;
- exports of vehicles and associated transport equipment up by EUR 16.8 million or 22.6 %;
- exports of live animals and animal products up by EUR 16.7 million or 21 %;
- exports of wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal up by EUR 12.2 million or 5.4 %;
- exports of vegetable products down by EUR 25.8 million or 19.2 %.
Main changes in imports in August 2025, compared to August 2024:
- imports of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment up by EUR 26.9 million or 8.4 %;
- imports of vegetable products up by EUR 13.1 million or 15.4 %;
- imports of mineral products down by EUR 43.5 million or 17.5 %;
- imports of products of the chemical and allied industries down by EUR 16.1 million or 7.7 %;
- imports of prepared foodstuffs down by EUR 7.3 million or 4.1 %.
In August main exports partners were Lithuania (19 % of total exports), Estonia (11.6 %), Germany (6.8 %) and United Kingdom (6.4 %), while Lithuania (23.3 % of total Latvian imports), Germany (12.2 %), Poland (11.4 %) and Estonia (9.6 %) were the main import partners.
Year-on-year exports to the United States reduced by 8.7 %, and was valued at EUR 30.7 million. The downturn was mainly affected by the reduction of EUR 2.9 million in exports of products of the chemical and allied industries. Imports from the United States increased 4.3 times and was valued at EUR 35.1 million. The upturn was mainly due to increased imports of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment and mineral products, which rose by EUR 12.3 million and EUR 9.3 million, respectively.
The rise in exports of dairy produce, birds' eggs, natural honey in August 2025, compared to August 2024, was mostly facilitated by upturn in exports of whey by EUR 0.4 million or 21.6 %. However, downturn in the exports of oil seeds, oleaginous fruits was caused by reduced export of rape and colza seeds, which fell by EUR 4.4 million or 9.9 %. Month-on-month data show that the rise in the exports of rape and colza seeds comprised EUR 40.3 million contributing to the growth of the oil seeds, oleaginous fruit products group during this period.

Year-on-year data show that the rise in the imports of vehicles and associated transport equipment was boosted by growing import of passenger cars, which went up by EUR 13.3 million or 16.7 %. However, downturn in the imports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation was caused by reduced import of electricity and natural gas, which fell by EUR 16.3 million and EUR 15.6 million, respectively.

In August 2025 foreign trade balance of Latvia was positive with 113 partner countries, as exports value of goods exceeded imports value of goods It was negative in trade with 51 countries.
The year-on-year share of the European Union countries in the total value of exports increased by 0.8 percentage points and in the total value of imports by 0.7 percentage points. The share of CIS countries reduced by 0.2 percentage points in exports and by 1.7 percentage points in imports.

In August 2025, compared to August 2024, exports to Russia increased by 5.1 % and comprised EUR 92.1 million. The upturn was mainly driven by the rise in export of footwear, headgear, umbrellas and other articles, which increased by EUR 4.3 million or 82 %. However, a decrease in exports was observed in the following commodity groups: machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipment (down by EUR 1.9 million) and live animals and animal products (down by EUR 1.2 million). Imports from Russia fell by 83.4 % and was valued at EUR 3.4 million. Reduced supply of goods from Russia was caused by reduced import of mineral products, which went down by EUR 17.1 million or 98.9 %.
Exports to Ukraine fell by 28.7 % and was valued at EUR 18.6 million. The main cause of this decline was export of the machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment, which fell by EUR 0.8 million or 24.3 %. Imports from Ukraine fell by 25.8 % and was valued at EUR 18 million. The main cause of this decline was import of the chemical and allied industries, which fell by EUR 4.6 million or 60.9 %.
Exports to Belarus decreased by 10 % and was valued at EUR 12 million. The drop was mostly affected by downturn in exports of pulp of wood, paper and paperboard and articles thereof by EUR 2 million. Imports from Belarus reduced by 73.4 % and was valued at EUR 2.5 million. Decrease in imports from Belarus was mostly affected by the drop in import of products of animal or vegetable fats and oils by EUR 1.5 million.

Starting with the data on 2024, Latvian exports include businesses exporting goods from Latvia to third countries through other EU countries where they have filled in export customs declarations for the export of goods to third countries. In August 2025 the value of these transactions comprised EUR 5.8 million or 0.4 % of total exports.
