In July the exports value of goods increased by EUR 1.2 million

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) provisional data show that in July 2025 Latvia had foreign trade turnover of EUR 3.53 billion, and at current prices it was 3.2 % higher than a year ago. Value of exported goods increased by 0.1 % and of imported goods by 5.7 %. The exported goods were valued at EUR 1.51 billion and imported goods at EUR 2.02 billion.

As exports in the total foreign trade decreased from 44.1 % in July 2024 to 42.7 % in July 2025, foreign trade balance worsened. Please note that the statistics for foreign trade in goods is presented at actual prices and calculated based on the goods value in euro, not the physical amount or quantity.

In the first seven months of this year, Latvian foreign trade turnover at current prices reached EUR 24.63 billion, which is EUR 1 350.8 million or 5.8 % more than in the corresponding period of 2024. The exported goods were valued at EUR 11.25 billion (up by EUR 389.6 million or 3.6 %) and imported goods at EUR 13.38 billion (up by EUR 961.3 million or 7.7 %).

Data on April 2025 have been revised.

Calendar and seasonally adjusted year-on-year data show that the value of exported goods at current prices fell by 1.2 %, and that of imported goods rose by 6.2 %. Month-on-month data indicate an increase of 1.1 % in the value of exports and a decrease of 1.6 % in the value of imports.

Lithuania remained the largest destination for goods exported from Latvia in July – with a share of 20.2 % – while Estonia came second with 11.7 %. Germany followed at some distance with 7 %, and the United Kingdom with 6.6 %. Lithuania was also the leading trading partner for imports – with a share of 17.9 %. Germany followed with 12.9 %, Poland with 11.2 %, and Estonia with 8.6 %.

Year-on-year exports to the United States reduced by 24.3 %, and was valued at EUR 34.8 million. The downturn was driven primarily by reduced exports of wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal, which dropped by EUR 5.3 million. Imports from the United States fell by 4.9 % and was valued at EUR 19.6 million. The downturn was mainly due to decreased imports of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment, which fell  by EUR 6.1 million.

Year-on-year data show that the rise in the exports of dairy produce, birds' eggs, natural honey was boosted by growing export of fresh eggs of domestic fowls, which went up by EUR 4.4 million. However, downturn in the exports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation was caused by reduced export of peat, incl. peat litter, whether or not agglomerated, which fell by EUR 7.4 million or 23.9 %.

Year-on-year data show that the rise in the imports of machinery and mechanical appliances was boosted by growing import of parts of non-electrical engines and motors, which went up by EUR 22.4 million. However, downturn in the imports of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages was caused by reduced import of whiskey, which fell by EUR 6.4 million or 39.6 %.

In July 2025, Latvia had foreign trade surplus in the trade with 121 partners (that is, trade balance was positive as exports exceeded imports) and foreign trade deficit in the trade with 49 partners.

The year-on-year share of the European Union countries in the total value of exports increased by 1.5 percentage points and in the total value of imports decreased by 1 percentage point. The share of CIS countries rose by 0.7 percentage points in exports and fell by 0.9 percentage points in imports.

In July 2025, compared to July 2024, exports to Russia rose by 11.8 % and comprised EUR 99.3 million. The upturn was mainly driven by the rise in export of textiles and textile articles, which increased by EUR 9.2 million or 78.5 %. However, a decrease in exports was observed in the following commodity groups: prepared foodstuffs (down by EUR 8.1 million or 16.8 %) and machinery and mechanical appliances, electrical equipment (down by EUR 3.8 million or 80.5 %). Imports from Russia fell by 69.1 % and was valued at EUR 6.3 million. Reduced supply of goods from Russia was caused by reduced import of mineral products, which went down by EUR 16.7 million or 99.5 %.

Exports to Ukraine fell by 5.2 % and was valued at EUR 24.2 million. The drop was mainly affected by the fall in exports of mineral products by EUR 0.7 million or 72.8 %. Imports from Ukraine fell by 21.6 % and was valued at EUR 19.2 million. The main cause of this decline was import of the chemical and allied industries, which fell by EUR 3.9 million or 51.5 %.

Exports to Belarus higher by 16.9 % and comprised EUR 13.1 million. The rise was mostly affected by upturn in exports of prepared foodstuffs by EUR 2.3 million or 86.6 %. Imports from Belarus reduced by 62.7 % and was valued at EUR 4 million. Decrease in imports from Belarus was mostly affected by the drop in imports of plastics; rubber and articles thereof by EUR 1.7 million or 66.7 %.

Methodological information:

 

Starting with the data on 2024, Latvian exports include businesses exporting goods from Latvia to third countries through other EU countries where they have filled in export customs declarations for the export of goods to third countries. In July 2025 the value of these transactions comprised EUR 7 million or 0.5 % of total exports.
