In June Latvia exported goods in the amount of EUR 1.4 billion

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) provisional data show that in June 2025 Latvia had foreign trade turnover of EUR 3.26 billion, and at current prices it was 1.8 % higher than a year ago. Value of exported goods decreased by 2.6 % and of imported goods increased by 5.4 %. The exported goods were valued at EUR 1.4 billion and imported goods at EUR 1.86 billion.

As exports in the total foreign trade decreased from 44.8 % in June 2024 to 42.9 % in June 2025, foreign trade balance worsened. Please note that the statistics for foreign trade in goods is presented at actual prices and calculated based on the goods value in euro, not the physical amount or quantity.

In the first six months of this year, Latvian foreign trade turnover at current prices reached EUR 21.06 billion, which is EUR 1194.9  million or 6 % more than in the corresponding period of 2024. The exported goods were valued at EUR 9.72 billion (up by EUR 365.2 million or 3.9 %) and imported goods at EUR 11.34 billion (up by EUR 829.7 million or 7.9 %).

Data on July, August, September, October, November 2024 and March 2025 have been revised.

Calendar and seasonally adjusted year-on-year data show that the value of exported goods at current prices fell by 0.7 %, and that of imported goods rose by 5.4 %. Month-on-month data indicate a decrease of 5.1 % in the value of exports and increase of 0.9 % in the value of imports.

Lithuania remained the largest destination for goods exported from Latvia in June – with a share of 19.7 % –, Estonia came second with 12.4 %. Germany followed at some distance with 7.1 %, and the United Kingdom with 5.9 %. Lithuania was also the leading trading partner for imports – with a share of 20.9 %. Germany followed with 12.1 %, Poland with 11.5 %, and Estonia with 8.4 %.

Year-on-year exports to the United States reduced by 16.6 %, and was valued at EUR 30.1 million. The downturn was driven primarily by reduced exports of wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal, which dropped by EUR 6.8 million. Imports from the United States fell by 23.4 % and was valued at EUR 13.7 million. The downturn was mainly due to decreased imports of optical instruments and apparatus (including medical), which fell by EUR 1.7 million.

Year-on-year data show that the rise in the exports of dairy produce, birds' eggs, natural honey was boosted by growing export of cheese and curd, which went up by EUR 2.7 million or 25.1 %. However, downturn in the exports of articles of iron or steel was caused by reduced export of miscellaneous articles of iron or steel, which fell by EUR 5.1 million or 44.5 %.

Year-on-year data show that the rise in the imports of vehicles and associated transport equipment was boosted by growing import of passenger cars, which went up by EUR 11.8 million or 15.3 %. However, downturn in the imports of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages was caused by reduced import of whiskey, which fell by EUR 10.1 million or 58.7 %.

In June 2025 Latvia had surplus trade balance (meaning that value of exports was greater than the value of imports) with 111 countries and deficit trade balance with 58 countries.

The year-on-year share of the European Union countries in the total value of exports increased by 1.9 percentage points and in the total value of imports decreased by 0.2 percentage points. The share of CIS countries rose by 0.2 percentage points in exports and fell by 2.5 percentage points in imports.

Year-on-year comparison indicates a 7.2 % increase in the exports to Russia, which was valued at EUR 71 million. The upturn was mainly driven by the rise in export of textiles and textile articles, which increased by EUR 4.9 million or 65.4 %. Imports from Russia fell by 86.4 % and was valued at EUR 4.7 million. Reduced supply of goods from Russia  was mainly caused by reduced import of prepared foodstuffs and mineral products, which went down by EUR 13.2 million and EUR 10.6 million, respectively.

Exports to Ukraine fell by 50.4 % and was valued at EUR 14.9 million. The main cause of this decline was export of the machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment, which fell by EUR 1.5 million or 40 %. Imports from Ukraine fell by 5.5 % and was valued at EUR 21.7 million. The main cause of this decline was import of the chemical and allied industries, which fell by EUR 2 million or 27.2 %.

Exports to Belarus decreased by 30.2 % and was valued at EUR 8.9 million. The drop was mainly affected by reduced export of plastics and articles thereof; rubber and articles thereof (down by EUR 1.4 million or 87.1 %). Imports from Belarus reduced by 56.3 % and was valued at EUR 8.2 million. The main cause for this reduction was import of products of animal or vegetable fats and oils, which went down by EUR 6.1 million or 54.6 %.

Methodological information:

 

Starting with the data on 2024, Latvian exports include businesses exporting goods from Latvia to third countries through other EU countries where they have filled in export customs declarations for the export of goods to third countries. In June 2025, the value of these transactions made up EUR 7 million, or 0.5 % of the total exports.
