Value of exported goods rose by 8.9 % in April
Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) provisional data show that in April 2025 Latvia had foreign trade turnover of 3.61 billion euro, and at current prices it was 6.6 % higher than a year ago. Value of exported goods increased by 8.9 % and of imported goods by 4.7 %. The exported goods were valued at 1.67 billion euro and imported goods at 1.94 billion euro.
As exports in the total foreign trade rose from 45.3 % in April 2024 to 46.3 % in April 2025, foreign trade deficit narrowed. Please note that the statistics for foreign trade in goods is presented at actual prices and calculated based on the goods value in euro, not the physical amount or quantity.
In the first four months of this year, Latvian foreign trade turnover at current prices reached 14.17 billion euro, which is 869.4 million euro or 6.5 % more than in the corresponding period of 2024. The exported goods were valued at 6.64 billion euro (up by 290.6 million euro or 4.6 %) and imported goods at 7.53 billion euro (up by 578.8 million or 8.3 %).
Data on January, February, March, and November 2024 and January 2025 have been revised.
Calendar and seasonally adjusted year-on-year data show that the value of exported goods at current prices rose by 12.4 %, and that of imported goods by 8.3 %. Month-on-month data indicate an increase of 2 % in the value of exports and of 6.7 % in the value of imports.
Main year-on-year changes in exports:
- exports of mineral products up by 62.3 million euro or 55.9 %;
- exports of live animals and animal products up by 29 million euro or 38.4 %;
- exports of vehicles and associated transport equipment up by 17.4 million euro or 20.6 %;
- exports of products of the chemical or allied industries up by 12.8 million euro or 9.3 %;
- exports of prepared foodstuffs down by 16.4 million euro or 9.5 %.
Main year-on-year changes in imports:
- imports of mineral products up by 57.2 million euro or 39.9 %;
- imports of vehicles and associated transport equipment up by 17.9 million euro or 9.6 %;
- imports of products of the chemical or allied industries up by 17.3 million euro or 7.3 %;
- imports of live animals and animal products up by 14.5 million euro or 19.7 %;
- imports of prepared foodstuffs down by 36.4 million euro or 17.2 %.
Lithuania remained the largest destination for goods exported from Latvia in April – with a share of 18.2 % – and Estonia came second with 11.4 %. Germany followed at some distance with 6.6 %, and Sweden with 5.4 %. Lithuania was also the leading trading partner for imports – with a share of 21.1 %. Poland followed with 12.4 %, Germany with 11.5 %, and Estonia with 8.8 %.
Considering heightened global interest in current events in the United States, it is also relevant to examine trade in goods with it. Year-on-year exports to the United States reduced by 22.7 %, and was valued at 33.8 million euro. The downturn was driven primarily by reduced exports of optical, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; clocks and watches; musical instruments; parts and accessories thereof, as well as products of the chemical or allied industries, which dropped by 3.9 million euro and 3.4 million euro respectively. Imports from the United States increased by 16.9 % and was valued at 27.8 million euro. The upturn was mainly due to increased imports of optical, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; clocks and watches; musical instruments; parts and accessories thereof, which rose by 9.2 million euro.
Year-on-year data show that the rise in the exports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation was boosted by growing export of motor gasoline, which went up by 35.6 million euro. However, downturn in the exports of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages was caused by reduced export of sparkling wine, which fell by 12.8 million euro or 78.1 %.

The year-on-year growth in the imports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation was driven primarily by the increased import of motor gasoline as well as electricity – of 18 million euro and 14.6 million euro respectively. However, downturn in the imports of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages was caused by the decline in import of sparkling wines and whiskey – of 5.9 million euro and 5.8 million euro respectively.

In April 2025, Latvia had foreign trade surplus in the trade with 117 partners (that is, trade balance was positive as exports exceeded imports) and foreign trade deficit in the trade with 52 partners.
The year-on-year share of the European Union countries in the total value of exports increased by 1.4 percentage points and in the total value of imports by 1.1 percentage points. The share of CIS countries reduced by 1.9 percentage points in exports and by 1.8 percentage points in imports.

Year-on-year comparison indicates a 16.4 % reduction in the exports to Russia, which was valued at 79.2 million euro. The decline was mainly driven by the drop in export of prepared foodstuffs, which fell by 24 million euro or 47.1 %. Imports from Russia fell by 79.4 % and was valued at 7.8 million euro. Reduced supply of goods from Russia also was caused by reduced import of prepared foodstuffs, which went down by 12.8 million euro or 85.9 %.
Exports to Ukraine declined by 12.6 % and was valued at 27.6 million euro. The decrease was primarily because of the reduction in export of mineral products (down by 1.5 million euro or 85.7 %). Imports from Ukraine fell by 18.8 % and was valued at 21.3 million euro. The main cause of this decline was import of the chemical and allied industries, which fell by 4.1 million euro or 48.1 %.
Exports to Belarus increased by 6.7 % and was valued at 13.7 million euro. The increase was mainly boosted by export of optical, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; clocks and watches; musical instruments; parts and accessories thereof (up by 3.3 million euro). Imports from Belarus reduced by 34.6 % and was valued at 8.3 million euro. The main cause for this reduction was import of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment, which went down by 1.4 million euro or 82.7 %.

Starting with the data on 2024, Latvian exports include businesses exporting goods from Latvia to third countries through other EU countries where they have filled in export customs declarations for the export of goods to third countries. In April 2025, the value of these transactions made up 8.1 million euro, or 0.5 % of the total exports.
