In March, the value of exported goods rose by 8.1 %

Provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in March 2025 the foreign trade turnover of Latvia amounted to EUR 3.68 billion, which at current prices was 8.1 % larger than a year ago, of which both exports and imports of goods was 8.1 % higher. In March Latvia exported goods in the amount of EUR 1.7 billion, but imported – in the amount of EUR 1.97 billion.

Compared to March 2024, foreign trade balance remained unchanged as exports in total foreign trade amount reached 46.3 %. Please note that the statistics for foreign trade in goods is shown in actual prices and calculated based on the goods value in euro, not the physical amount or quantity.

During the three months of this year foreign trade turnover of Latvia at current prices reached EUR 10.5 billion – EUR 549.2 million or 5.5 % more than in the corresponding period of 2024. The exports value constituted EUR 4.92 billion (a growth of EUR 93.1 million or 1.9 %), whereas the imports value comprised EUR 5.58 billion (a rise of EUR 456.1 million or 8.9 %).

Data on October and December 2024 have been revised.

Calendar and seasonally adjusted data show that in March 2025, compared to March 2024, the exports value at current prices went up by 5.6 %, but the imports value – by 4.1 %, whereas, compared to the previous month, the exports value went up by 0.03 %, but the imports value by 1.1 %.

In March main exports partners were Lithuania (17.3 % of total exports), Estonia (11.7 %), Germany (6.5 %) and United Kingdom (5.7 %), while Lithuania (20.1 % of total Latvian imports), Germany (12.9 %), Poland (11.7 %) and Estonia (8.1 %) were the main import partners.

Taking into account the world's attention to current events in the USA, we also look at foreign trade data. In March 2025, compared to March 2024, exports to the USA rose by 24 % and comprised EUR 62.3 million. The upturn was mainly affected by the increase of EUR 14.4 million in exports of mineral products. Imports from the USA fell by 30.4 % and comprised EUR 23.8 million. Reduction in imports was mostly affected by the drop in imports of vehicles by EUR 5.6 million, respectively.

The rise in exports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation in March 2025, as compared to March 2024, was mostly facilitated by an increase in exports of motor gasoline by EUR 37.2 million. In turn, reduction in exports of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages was mostly influenced by decrease in exports of spirits by EUR 4.7 million or 12.8 %.

The rise in imports of vehicles and associated transport equipment in March 2025, as compared to March 2024, was mostly affected by an increase in imports of passenger cars by EUR 46.7 million or 69.5 %. In turn, reduction in imports of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages was mostly influenced by decrease in imports of whiskey by EUR 12.7 million or 67.6 %.

In March 2025 foreign trade balance of Latvia was positive with 121 partner countries, as exports value of goods exceeded imports value of goods, and deficit trade balance with 47 countries.

In March 2025, compared to March 2024, share of the European Union countries in total exports value decreased by 2.8 percentage points, but in total imports value rose by 3.3 percentage points. Share of CIS countries reduced by 1.2 percentage points in exports and by 2.2 percentage points in imports.

In March 2025, compared to March 2024, exports to Russia decreased by 17.7 % and comprised EUR 73.6 million. The drop was mostly affected by downturn in exports of prepared foodstuffs by EUR 13.5 million or 34 %. During this period, imports from Russia went down by 87.2 % and comprised EUR 5.2 million, which is the lowest imports value so far. Also the reduction in imports in March 2025 was mainly affected by drop in imports of prepared foodstuffs by EUR 14.8 million or 94.5 %.

Exports to Ukraine fell by 24.1 % and comprised EUR 24.4 million. The drop was mainly affected by the decrease in exports of optical instruments and apparatus by EUR 0.7 million or 46.5 %. Imports from Ukraine rose by 7.8 % and comprised EUR 23.4 million. The upturn was mostly affected by the rise of EUR 1.6 million in imports of wood and articles of wood; wood charcoal.

Exports to Belarus fell by 20.3 % and comprised EUR 10.4 million. The drop was mainly affected by the drop in exports of textiles and textile articles of EUR 1.8 million or 75.2 %. Imports from Belarus fell by 62.3 % and comprised EUR 6.5 million. Downturn in imports from Belarus was mostly affected by the reduction in imports of products of animal or vegetable fats and oils of EUR 4.1 million or 54.3 %.

Methodological information:

Starting with the data on 2024, exports of Latvia includes data on enterprises that exported goods from Latvia to third countries through other EU member states by filling in export customs declarations for the export of goods to third countries. In March 2025 the value of these transactions comprised EUR 6.3 million or 0.4 % of total exports.
