Key Indicators

Population by age and sex

Sex and age are key characteristics of a population. As annual mortality has continuously exceeded the annual number of births, population of Latvia has been declining since 1991. This has also affected the age composition of the population.

Every year, more boys than girls are born in Latvia. However, men remain in the majority until the age of 35–40, after which women quickly take over due to their longer life expectancy.

More statistics for children is available in the collection of statistics Children in Latvia, which covers information on the number of children births and deaths, their age composition, state of health, education, social protection, risk of material deprivation and monetary poverty in households with children, employment of minors, use of information technologies, violence against children, and social deviance.
