Number of deaths

The number of deaths refers to the deaths registered in Latvia during the reference year. This number is not adjusted to include individuals declared dead after a prolonged period of absence.

In short-term statistics of current year, data on the number of registered deaths in the respective month are published. The number of deaths for current year includes a part of the deaths of the previous month and does not include all the deaths in the given month, because, according to the Civil Status Law Registration Law, the fact of death shall be registered within 6 working days.

In June, data on deaths in the previous year are compiled and published by the actual month of death.

Data on the weekly number of deaths are published on the 17th day after the end of the reference week on the official statistics portal (Wednesdays at 13.00.) Data on the number of deaths will be updated in May next year, taking into account the population estimate and the deaths of persons who have been permanent residents of Latvia but have died while temporarily staying abroad.
