More than 4000 Ukrainian children were registered in schools and kindergartens this autumn
Data of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that 36.6 thousand Ukraine citizens1 who had left their country due to the warfare had registered their place of residence in Latvia on 1 October 2022. Children aged under 18 accounted for 11.3 thousand (30.8 %).
Out of the total children number, children at pre-school age accounted for 3.5 thousand (9.5 % of all Ukraine citizens) and children at school age (aged 7–17) for 7.8 thousand (21.3 % of all Ukraine citizens). On 1 October slightly more than 4 thousand children of Ukraine citizens were registered in pre-school education institutions and general schools, 100 in vocational schools and almost 70 in higher education institutions.
Females constitute majority of Ukraine citizens – 22.8 thousand or 62.2 %, and males comprise 13.8 thousand or 37.8 %.
In terms of labour market engagement age, 25.4 % of the people are under the working age (aged 0–14), 68.2 % of working age (15–64), and 6.4 % over working age (65+). The share of people at working age constitutes 72.6 % among females and 61.1 % among males.
Employment of Ukraine citizens
Data of the State Revenue Service show that 6.7 thousand Ukraine citizens were registered as employees in July 2022.
The largest share of Ukrainians was employed in industry (22.3 %), followed by accommodation and food service activities (16.8 %), as well as wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (15.4 %). Financial, insurance, real estate, scientific, administrative activities employed 9.0 % and construction 8.5 %.
In terms of occupations, 40.9 % of the employed Ukraine citizens (registered as employees) were engaged in elementary occupations (e.g., were domestic, hotel and office cleaners and helpers, kitchen helpers, shelf fillers, etc.), 20.2 % were service and sales workers, 15.6 % craft and related trades workers, and 0.5 % managers.
1 The data include citizens of Ukraine place of residence whereof was declared in Latvia at the beginning of the respective month, while at the beginning of 2022 it was not. Additionally, person must have a residence permit for at least 11 months as well as at least one of the following criteria should be met: the person has been granted temporary protection status or has Ukrainian citizenship.
