Activities of court. Criminal cases
The Court Administration of Latvia organizes and ensures the administrative work of district (city) courts, regional courts, as well as provides official statistics on the operation of courts.
Criminal cases are cases brought to court relating to a criminal offence and the persons engaged. A court administers justice in criminal matters by examining and deciding the validity of charges brought against a person, acquitting persons who are not guilty, or finding persons guilty of committing a criminal offence in a court hearing and determining a sentence.
Regional courts, acting as appellate courts, examine cases according to the appeal procedure, i.e., upon request review the decision of the court of first instance if it is considered as incorrect.
