Press release

Share of households spending on pets accounts for 37 %

Data of the Household Budget Survey conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that over the last decade, household expenditure on pets, related products and veterinary services, which is among the costs growing the most sharply, increased 3.6 times. In 2016, this expenditure reached 46 euros per household member annually (in 2006 – 13 euros). Just like ten years ago, this kind of expenditure was registered in 37 % of households.

Due to the rise of 27 % in consumer prices of pet-related products and veterinary services during the past ten years, the consumption expenditure on pets at constant prices went up 2.1 times.

Bulk (85 %) of the expenditure on pets was formed by costs of pet foods, veterinary and grooming products for pets, collars, leashes, kennels, birdcages, fish tanks, cat litters, etc. Veterinary and other services for pets such as grooming, boarding, tattooing and training constituted 11 % and pet purchase comprised 4 % of the total pet costs. Over the last ten years, structure of these costs has not changed notably.

In 2016, household consumption expenditure comprised on average 333 euros per household member monthly. Expenditure on food, housing, transport, clothing and footwear, and health constituted two thirds (68 %) of the total consumption expenditure. The rest of the consumption expenditure (32 %) was formed by costs of miscellaneous goods and services, recreation and culture, restaurants and hotels, furnishing, household equipment and routine maintenance of the house, communication, alcoholic beverages, and education.
