Consumption of food products

According to the Household Budget Survey, consumption of fermented milk products, cheese, butter, cottage cheese, ice cream and milk-based desserts, as well as game meat, coffee, soft drinks and bottled water increased in 2025 compared with 2019.

At the same time, consumption of bread, milk, pork, fish, potatoes, sugar and eggs decreased, while consumption of fresh beef and poultry, fresh cucumbers and tomatoes, and fruit and vegetable juices remained relatively stable.

The decline in consumption of some food products may be partly related to households eating out, ordering takeaway or using food delivery services, as well as to a growing preference for store-bought ready-to-eat meals, which are classified as ready-made meals rather than as individual food products.

In 2025, rural households generally consumed more potatoes, bread, milk, eggs, flour, pork, game meat, fresh carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers and cabbage, as well as jam and sugar than urban households. While urban households consumed more poultry and beef, cheese, milk-based desserts, confectionery products, ready-made sandwiches and pizzas, fruit and vegetable juices, as well as bananas, apples, watermelons, oranges and mandarins.

The Household Budget Survey was not conducted in 2017 or 2018, as well as during the period from 2020 to 2024. The most recent survey was conducted in 2025, with the results becoming available in August 2026.
