Crimes and persons accused
Data prepared by the Information Centre of the Ministry of the Interior regarding the number of recorded crimes and crime rates, number of persons accused and number of criminal offenses committed by persons accused.
Recorded crimes are criminal violations and criminal offences reported to the judicial bodies and where a criminal case (proceedings) has been initiated. The crime is a criminal offence that has been defined in the Criminal Law of the Republic of Latvia, an action endangering society and entailing criminal punishment whether committed intentionally or through negligence.
Crimes are classified as:
- Crimes qualified on the basis of the Article of the Criminal Law (especially serious, serious, less serious, criminal violations);
- Other crimes qualified according to belonging to a group object or crimes registered/entered in the Criminal Procedure Information System and in the Punishment Register, which are qualified only by the Criminal Law Division.

Especially serious crimes
An especially serious crime is an intentional offence, such as murder under aggravating and especially aggravating circumstances, extortion by an organized group or robbery that resulted in serious consequences, for which the Criminal Law provides for deprivation of liberty for a term exceeding eight years or life imprisonment.
Serious crimes
Banditry, intentional homicide, intentional aggravated assault, rape, robbery, theft under aggravating circumstances and other crimes of a similar type for which the Criminal Law provides for deprivation of liberty for a term exceeding three years but not exceeding eight years.
