In August actual unemployment rate stable at 6.8 %

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) estimate shows that actual unemployment rate in Latvia has not changed since the beginning of summer and in August 2024 was 6.8 %. Over the year, actual unemployment rate has increased by 0.4 percentage points.

Additionally, unemployment rate remained stable for both genders – at 8.2 % for men and 5.4 % for women.

The unemployment rate registered with the State Employment Agency (SEA) was 5.3 %. It has increased by 0.1 percentage points over the month and reduced by 0.2 percentage points over the year.

In August 2024 there were 64.9 thousand unemployed persons in Latvia (25.4 thousand women and 39.4 thousand men), which is 0.1 thousand more than a month ago and 3.4 thousand more than a year ago.   Over the month, the number of unemployed men grew by 0.2 thousand and of unemployed women reduced by 0.1 thousand.

SEA calculates registered unemployment rate using the data on the registered unemployed persons available to the agency and the data provided by the CSB on active population (employed and unemployed persons) of working age. Actual unemployment rate is estimated indirectly, based on the quarterly Labour Force Survey results compiled by the CSB and SEA monthly data on registered unemployed persons.
