Latvian unemployment rate was 6.5 % in Q3 2023
Results of the Labour Force Survey (LFS) conducted by Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in Q3 2023 Latvia had an unemployment rate of 6.5 %. Over the quarter it grew by 0.1 percentage points and over the year reduced by 0.4 percentage points.
In Q3 2023 there were 61.5 thousand unemployed persons aged 15–74 (incl.), which is 4.9 thousand fewer than a year ago and 0.9 thousand more than in the previous quarter.

In Q2 2023 Latvian unemployment rate (6.4 %) was 0.6 percentage points above the EU average (5.8 %). In Q3 2023 it was lower than in Estonia (7.3 %) and higher than in Lithuania (6.2 %).

Smaller proportion of long-term unemployed
In Q3 2023, 35.0 thousand unemployed persons did not have a job for up to five months, which is 2.6 thousand more than a year ago and 3.1 thousand more than in the previous quarter. Persons unemployed for 6–11 months accounted for 10.7 thousand (the number has reduced by 3.8 thousand over the year and grown by 0.1 thousand over the quarter).
In Q3 2023 there were 15.8 thousand long-term unemployed persons, which is a drop of 2.7 thousand over the year and of 2.1 thousand over the quarter. The share of long-term unemployed in the total number of unemployed persons was 25.6 %, which is 2.7 percentage points fewer than a year ago and 4.1 percentage points fewer than in the previous quarter.

Young people made 13.9 % of all unemployed persons
In Q3 2023 young people (aged 15–24) accounted for 13.9 % of all unemployed persons. The share has gone down by 4.9 percentage points over the year and up by 4.3 percentage points over the quarter.
Youth unemployment rate was 12.5 %, which is 5.2 percentage points lower than a year ago and 2.9 percentage points higher than in the previous quarter. The total number of young unemployed persons reduced by 3.9 thousand over the year and increased by 2.8 thousand over the quarter.
Out of all young people, 37.1 % were economically active (i.e., employed or actively looking for a job (unemployed)), while 62.9 % were inactive (mostly still in education and not looking for job).
Decline in inactive population
In Q3 2023 almost a third (30.9 % or 425.0 thousand people) of the population aged 15–74 was inactive, i.e., was neither in employment, nor actively looking for a job. Over the quarter inactive population reduced by 5.9 thousand people or 1.4 % while over the year by 1.8 thousand people or 0.4 %.
Out of the total inactive population, 0.4 % were discouraged from finding a job (0.6 % in Q3 2022 and 0.9 % in Q2 2023).
In Q3 2023 LFS covered 5.0 thousand households in which 8.4 thousand people aged 15–89 were interviewed, including 4.3 thousand households with 7.2 thousand people aged 15–74.
