In January actual unemployment 6.9 % and registered 6.3 %

Results of the Labour Force Survey conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSB) show that in January 2023 actual unemployment rate in Latvia accounted for 6.9 %, and compared to December 2022 it has increased by 0.2 percentage points.

Unemployment rate among both men and women grew by 0.2 percentage points (to 4.9 % and 9.0 %, respectively).

Data on July, August, September, October, November and December 2022 are specified.

The unemployment rate registered with the State Employment Agency (SEA) constituted 6.3 % and has grown by 0.2 percentage points since December. Compared to January 2022, actual unemployment rate has gone down by 0.5 percentage points and registered by 0.6 percentage points.

In January 2023 there were 65.9 thousand unemployed persons in Latvia (23.1 thousand females and 42.8 thousand males), which is a rise of 1.8 thousand over the month and a drop of 3.3 thousand over the year.  Over the month, the number of unemployed males grew by 0.9 thousand and of unemployed females by 0.8 thousand.

The SEA calculates registered unemployment rate by using own data on the registered unemployed persons and CSB data on active population (employed and unemployed persons) of working age. The actual unemployment rate is estimated based on not adjusted monthly survey results.
