Number of job vacancies reduced by 15.9 % in Q1 2023

Data of the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia show that in Q1 2023 there were 23.9 thousand job vacancies in Latvia, which is 4.5 thousand vacancies or 15.9 % fewer than in Q1 2022.

In private sector there were 13.7 thousand and in public sector 10.3 thousand vacant jobs. Over the year job vacancy number in private sector fell by 4.4 thousand or 24.2 % and in public sector by 0.1 thousand or 1.4 %.

Out of all jobs available in Latvia (both occupied and vacant), 2.6 % positions were vacant, of which 3.4 % in public and 2.2 % in private sector.

Compared to Q1 2022, in Q1 2023 the average number of occupied posts in the country went up by 4.5 thousand or 0.5 %. In private sector it dropped by 1.8 thousand or 0.3 % and in public grew by 6.2 thousand or 2.2 %.

In terms of major occupational groups, the largest share of job vacancies was recorded among skilled agricultural, forestry and fishery workers (4.2 %), technicians and associate professionals (4.1 %), craft and related trades workers (3.9 %), as well as elementary occupations (3.1 %).

As regards economic activities, the largest share of job vacancies was registered in public administration (7.9 %), followed by mining and quarrying (6.0 %), administrative and support service activities (3.7 %), construction (3.7 %), human health and social work activities (2.7 %), manufacturing (2.6 %), as well as transportation and storage (2.6 %).

Regional breakdown of the Q1 2023 data shows the largest share of vacant jobs in Riga (3.3 % or 17.0 thousand) and the smallest in Vidzeme and Latgale (1.3 % or 0.8 thousand and 1.3 % or 0.9 thousand, respectively). In Pierīga region 2.1 % of jobs or 3.1 thousand positions were vacant, in Zemgale 1.6 % or 1.1 thousand, and in Kurzeme 1.5 % or 1.2 thousand.

Among the three Baltic states, the greatest proportion of job vacancies was recorded in Latvia – 2.6 %, followed by Estonia and Lithuania with 1.9 % in each. Over the year the number of vacant jobs reduced in all Baltic states, with most notable decrease in Latvia (of 15.9 %), followed by Estonia (12.4 %) and Lithuania (1.4 %).
