Residents of State cities are satisfied to live in their city

Residents of all nine State cities1 are either very or rather satisfied to live in their city. The largest share of those who are satisfied to live in their city was recorded in Valmiera – 99.3 %, while in the rest State cities the indicator varied between 93.2 % and 99.2 %. Daugavpils indicated the most notable upturn in the share of residents satisfied to live in their city – of 12.5 percentage points (from 83.1 % in 2017 to 95.6 % in 2022). The data were acquired in a survey on quality of life in all State cities (except for Riga) conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSB). The survey about quality of life in Riga was carried out by Eurostat, therefore this time Riga is not included in the data.

In Liepāja, 85 % of residents are satisfied with educational facilities while with health care services less than a half

Out of all State cities, Liepāja has the greatest proportion of residents who are satisfied with educational facilities (kindergartens, schools, universities etc.) – 85.1 %, followed by Valmiera with 79.9 %, Jelgava with 77.5 %, Ogre with 68.2 %, Ventspils with 67.4 %, Rēzekne with 65.9 %, and Daugavpils with 64.1 %. Jēkabpils and Jūrmala have the smallest proportion of such residents – 54.4 % and 63.5 %, respectively.

The largest share of residents satisfied with health care services, doctors and hospitals was registered in Ventspils – 76.3 %. The share in Ogre accounted for 75.3 %, in Jelgava for 72.9 %, in Jūrmala for 71.4 %, and in Valmiera for 64.6 %. In Jēkabpils, Rēzekne and Daugavpils only slightly more than a half of residents is satisfied with health care services – 58.8 %, 53.8 %, 52 %, respectively. In addition, just 46.8 % of Liepāja residents said that were satisfied with health care services.

Liepāja has the highest proportion of residents (94.5 %) who are satisfied with cultural facilities (concert halls, theatres, museums and libraries). In Ventspils, Rēzekne and Jūrmala nine out of ten residents are satisfied with cultural facilities. In Ogre, Valmiera and Jelgava those were 88.7 %, 87.8 % and 86.3 %, respectively. The smallest share of residents who are satisfied with cultural facilities was observed in Jēkabpils (62.3 %) and Daugavpils (76.6 %).

Lowest satisfaction with public transport in Ogre

Less than a half of the residents of State cities on a typical day use urban public transport as one of the main modes of transportation2. The highest proportion of people using mainly urban public transport was observed in Liepāja (39.2 %), followed by Daugavpils (36.2 %), Jēkabpils (35.5 %), Jelgava (29.3 %), Rēzekne (28.9 %), Valmiera (27 %), Jūrmala (26.5 %) and Ventspils (23.7 %), while the smallest in Ogre (17.6 %).

Liepāja also has the largest share of residents who are satisfied with public transport (bus, tram or minibus) – 81.8 %, followed by Daugavpils with 80.9 %, Jūrmala with 77 %, Rēzekne with 67.8 %, Valmiera with 59.9 %, Ventspils with 59.2 %, Jelgava with 58.4%, and Jēkabpils with 53.4 %. The smallest share of those satisfied with public transport was recorded among residents of Ogre (40.1 %).

Car was one of the main modes of transportation used on a typical day by almost two thirds of residents of Ventspils, Ogre and Jelgava, 60.4 % of the Jūrmala residents, 58.9 % in Rēzekne, 57.8 % in Valmiera, and 57 % in Jēkabpils. Residents of Daugavpils and Liepāja used car the least frequently (46.1 % and 47.4 %, respectively).

Bicycle on a typical day was mainly used in Liepāja (18.4 %), Ventspils (15.6 %) and Jelgava (13.2 %), while the least often in Daugavpils (5.7 %), Jūrmala (6.7 %), and Rēzekne (6.8 %). Among other State cities, bicycle was used by 11.7 % of Valmiera residents, 11.1 % of Ogre residents and 8.3 % of Jēkabpils residents.

Methodological explanations:

1 The CSB conducted the survey on the satisfaction with the quality of life in cities from July to October 2022 in Daugavpils, Jelgava, Jēkabpils, Jūrmala, Liepāja, Ogre, Rēzekne, Valmiera and Ventspils. The survey covered 4 700 respondents and was conducted within the framework of the project Data collection for City and Subnational Statistics co-funded by the European Commission. Prior CSB conducted such survey in 2017. The results are available on the official statistics portal.

 

The survey on quality of life in cities in conducted in all EU countries based on a common methodology developed by Eurostat. More information on quality of life in European cities is published on the European Commission official website.
