Over the month, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages declined by 0.3 %

The latest data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that in August 2025, compared to July 2025, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages reduced by 0.3 %. Mainly under the influence of seasonal factors, in August prices decreased for fresh vegetables (5.6 %), potatoes (10.0 %) and fresh fruit (2.3 %).

Compared to July 2025, in August 2025 the average level of consumer prices reduced by 0.2 %.

Drop in prices of goods and services related to transport (0.2 percentage points), alcoholic beverages and tobacco products (0.1 percentage point), food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.1 percentage point), as well as rise in prices of goods and services related to housing (0.1 percentage point), miscellaneous goods and services group (0.1 percentage point) contributed the most to the price level changes.

Over the month, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages declined by 0.3 %. Price drop for fresh vegetables (5.6 %), potatoes (10.0 %) and fresh fruit (2.3 %) had the strongest downward influence on the average price level within the group. Due to the discounts, prices of dried, salted or smoked meat (1.3 %), milk (2.3 %), coffee (0.7 %) reduced. Prices of fresh or chilled fish (5.8 %) went down. In turn, as the promotions ended, cheese and curd (1.6 %), bread (0.9 %), chocolate (2.8 %), milk products (1.6 %) became more expensive. Prices of bakery products (0.9 %) also went up.

The average level of alcoholic beverage and tobacco product prices reduced by 1.9 %. Mainly due to discounts on beer, spirits and wine, prices of alcoholic beverages went down by 3.1 %. Prices of tobacco products increased by 0.4 %.

Average price level of goods and services related to housing rose by 0.6 %. The most significant price rise within the group was registered for electricity (2.5 %) and rentals for housing (3.1 %). In turn, downturn was registered in prices of heat energy (0.5 %).

Prices of goods and services related to transport decreased by 1.4 %, which was mainly affected by the drop in prices of fuels for transport by 2.1 %, of which of petrol by 3.2 %, of diesel by 1.5 %, and of auto gas by 1.1 %. Prices of passenger transport by air also went down. In turn, passenger transport by road, as well as maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment became more expensive.

Prices of goods and services related to recreation and culture fell by 0.6 %. Sales campaigns led to the drop in prices of pet food (3.1 %). Drop in prices was also registered for flowers.

The average level of restaurant and hotel service prices went up by 1.3 %. During the month the most significant price rise was registered for hotel services (6.0 %). Prices of restaurant and café services also increased – by 0.6 %.

Within the miscellaneous goods and services group prices increased by 2.2 %. Mainly due to the end of sales campaigns, articles for personal hygiene and beauty products became more expensive.

Among other commodity groups, the most significant fall in prices was for footwear and pharmaceutical products. Upturns, in turn, were registered in prices of bundled telecommunication services and garments.

Over the year, the average level of consumer prices rose by 4.1 %

Compared to August 2024, in August 2025 the average level of consumer prices* increased by 4.1 %. The average level of consumer prices was mainly influenced by the rise in prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, mainly of coffee, poultry, chocolate, fresh fruit, eggs, butter, cheese and curd.

Compared to August 2024, in August 2025 the average level of consumer prices was mainly influenced by the rise in prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages (2.0 percentage points), goods and services related to housing (0.6 percentage points), alcoholic beverages and tobacco products (0.3 percentage points).

Over the year, prices within the group of food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 7.5 %. Price rise for coffee (of 34.2 %) had the strongest upward influence on the average price level within the group. Prices of poultry (20.3 %), chocolate (29.9 %), fresh fruit (12.3 %), eggs (23.5 %), butter (20.0 %) cheese and curd (5.5 %) also went up. Prices increased for milk products (5.7 %), fresh vegetables (4.3 %), bakery products (3.7 %), milk (5.4 %), beef (28.8 %), dried, salted or smoked meat (2.3 %), vegetable oil (12.9 %). Decline, in turn, was registered in prices of fresh or chilled fish (14.9 %), potatoes (5.5 %), flours and other cereals (5.2 %), sugar (8.4 %).

The average level of alcoholic beverage and tobacco product prices rose by 3.8 %. Over the year average increase of 9.7 % was observed in prices of tobacco products. As prices of spirits went up, alcoholic beverages became more expensive (0.7 %) as well. In turn, fall was registered in prices of beer.

Average price level of goods and services related to housing rose by 3.6 %. Over the year, the most significant rise in the prices was for electricity (9.2 %). Maintenance charges in multi-occupied buildings (7.9 %), natural gas (10.9 %), services for the maintenance and repair of the dwelling (12.0 %), refuse collection (11.0 %), rentals for housing (5.5 %), sewage collection (4.2 %), and water supply (2.8 %) became more expensive as well. In turn, heat energy (4.3 %) and solid fuels (3.9 %) became cheaper.

The average level of health care prices grew by 2.7 %. Over the year, prices in medical specialist practice, dental services, services of medical analysis laboratories and x-ray centres went up. Downturn was registered in prices of pharmaceutical products.

Prices of goods and services related to recreation and culture rose by 3.6 %, as prices of television subscription fee, recreational and sporting services, newspapers and magazines increased.

The average level of restaurant and hotel service prices increased by 5.2 %. Upturn was observed in prices of catering services, of which prices of restaurant and café services rose by 4.1 %, of canteen services by 6.3 % and of fast food services by 6.5 %. Over the year, prices of hotel services also went up by 7.5 %.

Within the miscellaneous goods and services group prices increased by 3.8 %. Prices of articles for personal hygiene and beauty products went up. Retirement home fee for elderly persons and prices of hairdressing salons and personal grooming establishment services also increased. Motor vehicle insurance was cheaper.

Among other commodity groups, the most notable increase was registered in prices of telecommunication services, other services in respect of personal transport equipment, pre-primary education, footwear, maintenance and repair of personal transport equipment, household cleaning and maintenance products. In turn, fuels for transport (0.7 %) and second-hand motor cars were cheaper.

Compared to 2015, in August 2025 consumer prices were 51.4 % higher. Prices of goods increased by 49.1 % and prices of services by 55.8 %.

In August 2025 average consumer price changes in last 12 months, compared to the previous 12 months (annual average inflation) was 3.2 %.

Information on consumer price changes in September 2025 will be published on 8 October.

* The annual inflation reflects consumer price changes, comparing the average price level in the comparison month with the average price level in the corresponding month of the previous year.

 

Methodological information:

 

The consumer price survey is a sample survey with targeted sample at all levels. It is conducted each month from 4th to 20th date, distributing the price collection evenly over the survey period. In 2025, the CPI sample includes 544 goods and services, the prices of which are recorded regularly. Approximately 2 000 trade and services outlets are surveyed. In total, about 24.5 thousand prices are observed each month.
