In domestic tourism trips and trips abroad, residents of Latvia spent nearly EUR 1.80 billion

According to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB), in 2025 residents of Latvia spent a total of EUR 1,799 billion on same-day trips and overnight trips around Latvia and abroad. Domestic tourism declined slightly last year, while the number of trips abroad increased. 

Last year Latvian residents went on 10.6 million same-day trips and overnight trips around Latvia; compared with 2024, this number decreased slightly – by 1.0%. Last year, total expenditure of residents on domestic tourism trips amounted to EUR 528.0 million, an increase of 7.7 % compared with the value of 2024. For overnight trips around Latvia, residents spent a total of EUR 240.5 million last year (15.7 % more than in 2024), while for same-day trips they spent EUR 287.5 million (1.9 % more than in 2024). 

The highest average daily expenditure – EUR 35.8 – was recorded for trips to Riga region, followed by Kurzeme region (EUR 34.7 per night). Average daily expenditure amounted to EUR 28.9 when visiting Zemgale region, while in Vidzeme and Latgale regions it comprised EUR 27.9 and EUR 25.4, respectively.

In 2025, the number of overnight trips around Latvia increased by 1.4 %, compared with 2024, while the number of same-day trips decreased by 2.0 %. Of these trips, 58.7 % were visits to relatives and friends, 32.4 % were trips made for holidays, leisure and recreation, 6.3 % for personal reasons, and 2.6 % for professional, business purposes. In turn, almost all same-day trips (96.0 %) were taken for leisure or other personal purposes, while only 4.0 % were business trips. 


The same as a year ago, Riga remained the most popular destination in 2025, accounting for 10.9 % of overnight trips and 19.9 % of same-day trips. Other popular destinations were Liepāja (accounting for 5.9 % of overnight trips and 3.7 % of same-day trips), Jūrmala (3.0 % and 6.9 %, respectively), Valmiera municipality (4.3 % and 4.9 %), Cēsis municipality (4.7 % and 4.4 %), Talsi municipality (4.5 % and 3.1 %), and Ventspils (4.4 % and 2.4 %). 

The popularity of destination regions varied somewhat depending on the length of the trip. For overnight trips, the most popular destination region was Kurzeme (26.4 %), followed by Vidzeme (25.6 %), Riga region (19.8 %), Latgale (16.7 %), and Zemgale (11.5 %). By contrast, Riga region was the most popular destination for same-day trips (36.3 %), followed by Vidzeme region (22.6 %), Kurzeme region (18.6 %), Zemgale region (12.6 %), and Latgale region (9.9 %).

Both overnight trips and same-day trips around Latvia were more frequently made by women (54.8 % and 54.7 %, respectively), people aged 35–44 (26.7 % and 23.5 %), those with tertiary education (51.0 % and 45.2 %), and employed persons (74.7 % and 70.0 %).

7.8 million nights were spent in domestic tourism trips in 2025, which is 0.7 more than a year ago. In terms of accommodation, 57.8 % of the nights were spent in non-rented accommodation provided without charge by relatives or friends. Among overnight trips, 23.8 % included overnight stays in paid accommodation (hotels, campsites, hostels, and other rented accommodation), while 18.4 % involved stays in holiday homes or second residences or other private accommodation. 

Regarding the modes of transport, passenger cars or motorcycles were the most popular and were used for 85.4 % of all domestic overnight trips. This mode was followed by bus or coach which was used in 9.1 % of trips, railway in 5.1 %, and other mode of transport or movement in 0.4 %.

The number of trips abroad has increased, residents of Latvia spent in them EUR 1.3 billion

According to the CSB, residents of Latvia made 2.4 million trips abroad in 2025 – an increase of 4.7 % compared to the year before. They spent EUR 1.3 billion in trips abroad.

In 2025, residents of Latvia made 487.6 thousand same-day trips abroad, which is 3.7 thousand or 0.8 % more than in 2024. In such trips, EUR 41.8 million was spent – EUR 1.5 million or 3.6 % less than in 2024. The average expenditure per one trip amounted to EUR 85.70, which is EUR 3.85 less than in 2024. 

Lithuania and Estonia were the main destinations, accounting for 68.7 % and 28.8 % of all outbound tourism same-day trips made in 2025.


Residents went on 1.9 million overnight trips abroad, which is 104.0 thousand trips or 5.8 % more than in 2024. Most popular destinations of overnight trips abroad in 2025 were neighbouring countries Lithuania (15.0 %) and Estonia (14.7 %) took the lead. They were followed by Poland (8.2 %), Italy (5.2 %), Germany (5.1 %), and Spain (4.9 %).


In 2025, most Latvian residents used paid accommodation during their trips abroad (83.3 % of trips), with 58.6 % staying in hotels, resort hotels, motels, or guest houses. 16.7 % of trips made by Latvian residents involved stays in private accommodation, such as the homes of relatives or friends, or in other types of accommodation.

The largest share went on accommodation (36.7 %), followed by transport (31.0 %), catering (17.3 %), entertainment and cultural activities (6.1 %), and other expenses (8.9 %). Average expenditure per an overnight trip comprised EUR 645.9, which is EUR 72.5 more than in 2024. The average expenditure per one night comprised EUR 118.2 (EUR 13.8 more) last year.

For 52.7 % of trips abroad, residents travelled by air transport, which was 5.7 percentage points less than in 2024. The second most popular mode of transport was a passenger car or motorcycle (39.8 % of trips), while 5.4 % of trips abroad were made by buses.


The profile of a resident travelling abroad is similar to that of the typical domestic tourist in Latvia. Namely, the majority of resident travellers making overnight trips abroad were women (51.6 %), people aged 35–44 (27.3 %), residents with tertiary education (56.8 %), and employed persons (79.0 %).

The Survey on Recreational and Business Trips of Residents (1-C) was prepared in accordance with the methodology developed by the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat), and the information obtained is comparable with that of other European Union countries. As part of the 1-C survey, 11 735 persons aged 15 and over were surveyed in 2025.
