Arrivals at tourist accommodations up by 3.1 % in August

According to the Central Statistical Bureau data, which were acquired by compiling the monthly information provided by sector representatives on the activity of tourist accommodations, in August 2025 arrivals at Latvian tourist accommodation establishments totalled 392.9 thousand, which is 3.1 % more than in August 2024. 

Resident and non-resident visitors spent 706.1 thousand nights at the establishments – an increase of 4.4 % compared to the year before. 238.5 thousand or 60.7 % were non-residents; most of them (46.6 thousand) came from Lithuania. The number of visitors from Italy (21.3 %) and the United Kingdom (18.7 %) has gone up. The majority of visitors (59.2 % of non-residents and 20.7 % of residents) stayed in Riga, which was followed by visitors having stayed in Jūrmala (11.0 % of non-residents and 7.7 % of residents).

During the first eight months of this year, tourist establishments accommodated 2.0 million resident and non-resident visitors, which is 4.7 % more than during the same period of 2024.


Compared to July, in August 2025, the number of visitors has decreased by 3.1 % (the number of residents reduced by 9.4 %, but the number of non-residents increased by 1.5 %), the number of nights spent by them went down by 4.8 % (the number of nights spent by residents reduced by 9.4 %, but the number of nights spent by non-residents by 1.8 %). 

The number of non-resident arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments made up 238.5 thousand in August 2025 (60.7 % of all arrivals), which is 6.3 % more than in August 2024. The number of nights spent by non-residents, compared to August last year, has grown by 7.1 % and comprised 439.3 thousand. Non-residents on average spent 1.8 nights1 at the tourist accommodation establishments (1.8 nights also in August last year).

The greatest number of non-resident travellers came from Lithuania (46.6 thousand), Germany (29.3 thousand), Estonia (28.4 thousand), Poland (13.6 thousand), Finland (12.4 thousand), Spain (10.9 thousand), United Kingdom (10.4 thousand), USA (8.9 thousand), Italy (8.2 thousand) and France (6.1 thousand).

The majority of non-residents stayed in Riga (59.2 %), which was followed by Jūrmala (11.0 %), Liepāja (3.6 %), Mārupe municipality (3.2 %), Sigulda municipality and Ventspils (3.0 % in each), and Cēsis municipality (2.2 %).


In August 2025 tourist accommodation establishments hosted 154.4 thousand, which is a year-over-year decrease of 1.4 %. Resident visitors spent 266.8 thousand nights at the establishments (0.3 % more), and the average duration of resident stay was 1.7 nights (1.7 nights also a year ago).

Mostly residents stayed in Riga (20.7 %), Jūrmala (7.7 %), Liepāja (6.2 %), Cēsis municipality (5.7 %), Talsi municipality (4.8 %), Tukums and Kuldīga municipalities (4.0 % in each).

In August, average room occupancy rate of hotels and similar accommodation2 in Latvia was 60.6 % (a year-over-year rise of 1.9 percentage points), 70.2 % – in Riga (a year-over-year increase of 1.1 percentage points).

Methodological information

 

The information is compiled from the data provided by the respondents in the monthly Report on the activity of hotels and other accommodation establishments (CSB form 1-Accommodation). Economically active individual merchants and commercial companies whose main kind of economic activity corresponds to NACE Rev. 2.1 classes 55.10, 55.20, 55.30, as well as other merchants, budgetary institutions, associations, farms, and individuals providing short-term accommodation services in tourist accommodation establishments (also in addition to their main kind of economic activity in another sector) are included in the survey as respondents. In August the data on 1 343 accommodations was compiled. 

 

1 If during a trip visitor stays overnight in several places in Latvia, he/she is registered in each tourist accommodation.

 

2 Average room occupancy rate applies to hotels and similar accommodations; it is not calculated for other types of accommodations (such as guest houses, holiday houses, camping grounds, etc.).
