Arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments up by 10.9 % in 2024

Central Statistical Bureau data show that the number of non-resident and resident arrivals at the tourist accommodation establishments made up 2.7 million in 2024, which is 10.9 % more than in 2023. The visitors spent 4.7 million nights at the establishments, and it is 7.4 % more than in 2023. Moreover, domestic tourism figures have also improved.

In 2024, the share of non-resident arrivals represented 58.8 % of all arrivals at the tourist accommodation establishments (1.6 million), which is 14.3 % more than in 2023, however, 18.4 % fewer than before the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of nights spent by non-residents has grown by 10.2 %, compared to the previous year, and totalled 2.8 million. Non-residents on average spent 1.8 nights at the tourist accommodation establishments1 (1.9 nights in 2023).

The majority of non-resident visitors came from Lithuania (280.7 thousand), Estonia (180.5 thousand), Germany (165.7 thousand), Finland (112.3 thousand), United Kingdom (94.7 thousand), Poland (74.1 thousand), USA (59.6 thousand), Spain (55.5 thousand), Sweden (54.8 thousand) and Norway (45.1 thousand).

Most non-resident visitors were accommodated in Riga (71.5 %), Jūrmala (8.4 %), Mārupe municipality (3.3 %), Liepāja (3.0 %), Sigulda municipality (1.7 %), and Ventspils (1.4 %).

In 2024, tourist establishments accommodated 1.1 million Latvian visitors, which is 6.4 % more than in 2023 and 22.7 % more than in 2019. The number of nights spent by them totalled 1.85 million, which is a rise of 3.2 %, compared to 2023. Residents on average spent 1.7 nights at the tourist accommodation establishments (1.7 nights in 2023).

Most residents stayed in Riga (26.2 %), Jūrmala (10.1 %), Liepāja (6.6 %), Cēsis municipality (5 %), Daugavpils (3.5 %), Talsi municipality (3.4 %) and Sigulda municipality (3.4 %).

In December 2024, the number of non-resident and resident arrivals at tourist accommodation establishments made up 188.2 thousand, which is 12.6 % more than in December 2023. Non-resident visitors represented 59.5 % (112 thousand) of the arrivals and resident visitors 40.5 % (76.2 thousand). The number of nights spent by visitors totalled 330.4 thousand, and it is 13.9 % more than in 2023.

The average room occupancy rate in hotels and similar accommodation was 39.8 % in Latvia (up by 2.5 percentage points compared to December 2023) and 52.3 % in Riga (up by 4.7 percentage points).

In Q4 2024, the number of non-resident and resident arrivals at Latvian tourist accommodation establishments totalled 558.3 thousand, which is 11.9 % more than in Q4 2023. Visitors spent 974.8 thousand nights at the establishments (12.5 % more than in Q4 2023). The number of non-resident arrivals made up 333.5 thousand, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 17.1 %, and resident arrivals reached 224.7 thousand, representing a 5 % rise.
