In October number of visitors at tourist accommodation establishments 65.2 % larger than a year ago

According to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau, in October 2022 the number of foreign* and resident visitors comprised 178 thousand, which is 65.2 % more than in October 2021. As compared to October last year, the number of nights spent by visitors comprised 325.6 thousand, which is 61.4 % more.

During the ten months of this year, the number of foreign and resident visitors comprised 1.9 million – 64.5 % more than in the ten months of 2021, however, compared to the corresponding period of time before the pandemic in 2019, a drop of 24 % was observed in the number of visitors.

In October 2022, out of all visitors 56.3 % or 100.2 thousand were foreign visitors, which is 93.2 % more than last year. The number of nights spent by foreign visitors, compared to October last year, has grown by 97.9 % and comprised 193.4 thousand. The average length of stay of foreign visitors comprised 1.9 nights.

The majority of foreign visitors came from Lithuania (15.8 thousand), Estonia (13.2 thousand), Germany (8.3 thousand), United Kingdom (6.8 thousand), Finland (6.7 thousand), Norway (4 thousand), Ukraine (4 thousand) and Poland (3.9 thousand).

Out of foreign visitors 32.3 % or 32.3 thousand came from neighbouring countries – Lithuania (15.8 %), Estonia (13.2 %), Russia (2.2 %) and Belarus (1.1 %).

Most foreign visitors were hosted in Riga – 77.8 %, Jūrmala – 5.6 %, Mārupe municipality – 4.5 %, Liepāja – 2.3 % and Sigulda municipality – 1.8 %.

In October 2022, 77.8 thousand Latvian residents were hosted at tourist accommodation establishments, which is 39.2 % more than in October 2021. The number of nights spent by them comprised 132.2 thousand, and it rose by 27.1 %, compared to October last year.

Latvian visitors stayed mostly in Riga (29.5 %), Jūrmala (13.3 %), Liepāja (7.1 %), Sigulda municipality (5.4 %), Cēsis municipality (4.5 %), Daugavpils (3.4 %) and Valmiera municipality (2.8 %).

*where possible, refugees from Ukraine are not included in the number of foreign visitors in accordance with the common guidelines of the methodology on tourism statistics of European Statistical Office Eurostat.
