In H1 2025 passenger transport by land, in Riga International Airport and at ports has increased
Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) data show that, compared to H1 2024, in H1 2025 passenger traffic by train, tram, as well as by aircraft and ferries continues to rise. At the same time the data show that traffic by regular bus traffic lines has gone down.
During H1 2025, the number of passengers carried by land passenger transport comprised 95.7 million passengers, which is 0.6 % more than in H1 2024.
The largest upturn was registered in in the number of passengers carried by rail – 10.2 million, a rise of 12.5 %, compared to H1 2024.
‘The trend observed in the data shows that, due to increasingly developed infrastructure and services, Latvian residents and visitors are more frequently choosing a more sustainable and environmentally friendly mode of transport – the train. In cities as well, more passengers are using trams and trolleybuses, while fewer are using regular bus traffic lines’, says Sigita Purona-Sida, Director of the Environment Statistics Department.
The number of passengers carried by trams comprised 16.3 million passengers, which is 7.1 % more than a year ago, but by trolleybuses – 20 million passengers, which is almost the same as a year ago (a drop of 0.1 %). In turn, 49.2 million passengers were carried by regular bus traffic lines, which is 3.1 % less.

Methodological information
Data on passenger transport are obtained through a full survey from enterprises that provide urban electric transport services; carriers registered in the Republic of Latvia that provide regular commercial passenger transport by bus; enterprises engaged in passenger transport by rail; passenger terminals at ports; and airports (with an annual passenger turnover (arriving and departing passengers) of 150 000 or more).
