Passenger traffic in the 1st quarter of 2022

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) data show that in the 1^st quarter of 2022, compared to the 1^st quarter of 2021, passenger traffic by all modes of transport has increased.

In the 1^st quarter of 2022, the number of passengers carried by land passenger transport comprised 34.1 million passengers, which is 37.1 % more than in the 1^st quarter of 2021 and 33.9 % less than in the 1^st quarter of 2020.

2.8 million passengers were carried by rail transport, which is 46.4 % more than a year ago, but 24.7 % less than in the 1^st quarter of 2020. The number of passengers carried by national transport rose by 46.3 %, but the number of passengers carried by international transport – 3.8 times.

The number of passengers carried by regular bus traffic lines comprised 19.7 million passengers, which is 37.4 % more than in the 1^st quarter of 2021 and 32.6 % less than in the 1^st quarter of 2020. Number of passengers carried in national lines increased by 37.4 %, but the number of passengers carried in international lines – 2.8 times.

The number of passengers carried by trolleybuses comprised 6.2 million passengers, a rise of 27.3 %, but by trams – 5.4 million passengers, a growth of 44 %. Compared to the 1^stquarter of 2020, the number of passengers carried by trolleybuses fell by 38.9 %, but by trams – by 36.2 %.

In the 1^st quarter of 2022, 69.4 thousand passengers arrived at and departed from Latvian ports, which is 56.9 % more than in the 1^st quarter of 2021, but 57 % less than in the 1^st quarter of 2020. At Riga Passenger Terminal ferry traffic was still closed, at Ventspils port passenger turnover comprised 57 thousand passengers, which is 55.7 % more, but at Liepāja port – 12.3 thousand passengers, 62.9 % more than a year ago.

In the 1^st quarter of 2022 the number of passengers arrived at and departed from the Riga International Airport comprised 778.2 thousand, which is 7.2 times more than in the 1^st quarter of 2021 and 37.8 % less than in the 1^st quarter of 2020.
