In the 1st quarter freight transport increased in all transport sectors

Data of the Central Statistical Bureau show that, compared to the 1st quarter of 2021, in the 1st quarter of 2022 freight transport has risen in all transport sectors.

24.7 million tonnes of freights were carried by land and pipeline transport, a rise of 1.4 million tonnes or 6.2 % compared to a year ago and 18.2 % more than in the 1st quarter of 2020.

6.7 million tonnes of freights were carried by rail transport, which is 12.3 % more than in the 1st quarter of 2021 and 12.4 % more than in the 1st quarter of 2020. National freights by rail comprised 0.3 million tonnes – 10 % less. In international traffic the volume of freight transported by rail comprised 6.4 million tonnes, growth of 13.9 %. Of which export freight transport – 0.7 million tonnes, 34.1 % more, import freight transport – 4.8 million tonnes, rise of 21.9 %, but goods in transit – 0.9 million tonnes, 23.5 % less. In the 1st quarter of 2021 transportation of freights via Latvian ports comprised 4.7 million tonnes, which is 32.3 % more than in the 1st quarter of 2021.

17.9 million tonnes of freights were carried by road transport, which is 6.7 % more than in the previous year and 24.4 % more than in the 1st quarter of 2020. Transportation of national freights comprised 13.6 million tonnes, 9.4 % more. Transportation of international freights accounted for 4.3 million tonnes – 1 % less. Of which export freight transport comprised 1.4 million, 18.2 % more. Transportation of import freight rose by 15.9 % and comprised 0.9 million tonnes of freight. Cross-trade and cabotage freights comprised 2 million tons, 15.9 % less than in the previous year. 77.5 % of total road freights were transportation for hire or reward. They rose by 3.3 %.

0.1 million tonnes of oil products were transported via main pipeline, which is 84.7 % less than a year ago and 85.3 % less than in the 1st quarter of 2020.

After two years freight turnover at ports has increased

In the 1st quarter of 2022 the cargo loaded and unloaded at ports comprised 12.3 million tonnes, which is 10.5 % more than in the 1st quarter of 2021 and 1.5 % more than in the 1st quarter of 2020. Freight turnover at Riga port was 5.8 million tonnes, 7.1 % more, at Ventspils port – 4 million tonnes or 10.6 % more, at Liepāja port – 2 million tonnes or 30.7 % more, but at minor ports – 0.5 million tonnes or 11.4 % less.

Freights loaded at ports comprised 9.4 million tonnes, which is 4.7 % more than in the 1st quarter of 2021. The largest growth was observed in coal loaded – by 1.9 million tonnes or 12 times. Shipping of freights in containers rose by 3.6 %, volume of wood chips – by 4.7 %, volume of roll on/roll off – by 17 %. But volume of oil products loaded fell by 51.4 %, volume of grain and grain products – by 4.1 %, volume of mineral fertilisers – by 13 %, volume of timber – by 3.6 %.

2.9 million tonnes of freights were unloaded at ports, their volume rose by 34.9 %. Oil products unloaded increased by 35.4 %, volume of unloaded freights in containers – by 12.3 %, volume of roll on/roll off – by 19.1 %, volume of grain and grain products – 5.3 times, but volume of iron ore – by 4 %. But volume of unloaded metals and articles thereof fell by 3 %, volume of building materials – by 39.9 % and volume of wood chips – by 60.9 %.

Airport “Rīga” loaded and unloaded 6.4 thousand tonnes of freights or 12.9 % more.
