In Q1 2025 more freight transport by road and air
Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) data show that in Q1 2025, compared to Q1 2024, freight transport by road and air has increased, but freight transport by rail and sea – reduced.
In Q1 2025 land transport freights comprised 18.6 million tonnes, which is 1.5 % more than in Q1 2024.

7.6 % more freights transported by road
In Q1 2025 rail transport freights comprised 2.2 million tonnes, which is 28.3 % less than in Q1 2024. National freights by rail comprised 0.4 million tonnes – 3.9 % more. In international traffic the volume of freight transported by rail comprised 1.8 million tonnes, a drop of 33.1 %. Of which export freight transport – 0.3 million tonnes, 33.3 % less, import freight transport – 1.3 million tonnes, drop of 37.8 %, but goods in transit – 0.2 million tonnes, 19.5 % more. In Q1 2025 transportation of freights via Latvian ports comprised 1.1 million tonnes, which is 50.7 % less than in Q1 2024.
In Q1 2025 road transport freights comprised 16.4 million tonnes, which is 7.6 % more than in Q1 2024. Transportation of national freights comprised 12.1 million tonnes, 6.8 % more than a year ago. Transportation of international freights accounted for 4.3 million tonnes – 10 % more. Of which export freight transport comprised 1.2 million tonnes, 15.8 % more. Transportation of import freight fell by 3.2 % and comprised 0.8 million tonnes of freight. Cross-trade and cabotage freights comprised 2.3 million tonnes, which is 12.3 % more than in Q1 2024. 82.3 % of total road freights were transportation for hire or reward. They rose by 3.6 %.

Volume of liquid cargoes loaded and unloaded at ports go up by 54.5 %
In Q1 2025 the cargo loaded and unloaded at ports comprised 9.1 million tonnes, which is 7.3 % less than in Q1 2024. Freight turnover at Riga port was 4.4 million tonnes, 7.6 % less, at Ventspils port – 2.4 million tonnes or 1.3 % more, at Liepāja port – 1.6 million tonnes or 17.9 % less, but at minor ports – 0.7 million tonnes or 5.1 % less.
Freights loaded at ports comprised 6.6 million tonnes, which is 12.5 % less than in Q1 2024. 3.3 million tonnes of bulk cargoes were loaded (drop of 22.7 %), 0.8 million tonnes of liquid cargoes (rise of 32.5 %) and 2.5 million tonnes of general cargoes (fall of 6.6 %).
2.5 million tonnes of freights were unloaded at ports, their volume rose by 10.4 %. 0.6 million tonnes of bulk cargoes were unloaded (drop of 33.2 %), 1 million tonnes of liquid cargoes (rise of 80.1 %) and 0.9 million tonnes of general cargoes (growth of 10.9 %).
Riga International Airport loaded and unloaded 4.6 thousand tonnes of freights or 15.7 % more than in Q1 2024.
