In nine months less freights transported by all modes of transport

Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) data show that in the nine months of 2024, compared to the nine months of 2023, freight transport by all modes of transport has reduced, but transportation via oil products pipeline doesn’t take place since 2023.

66.1 million tonnes of freights were carried by land transport, a decrease of 11.2 % compared to a year ago.

In nine months national freights by rail increases by 9.7%

In the nine months of 2023 rail transport freights comprised 8.4 million tonnes, which is 27.4 % less than in the nine months of 2023. National freights by rail comprised 1.4 million tonnes – 9.7 % more. In international traffic the volume of freight transported by rail comprised 7 million tonnes, a drop of 31.9 %. Of which export freight transport – 1.4 million tonnes, 51.8 % less, import freight transport – 5 million tonnes, drop of 26.2 %, but goods in transit – 0.6 million tonnes, 4.1 % less. As compared to the nine months of 2023, transportation of freights via Latvian ports comprised 5.3 million tonnes, which is 34.4 % less.

Freights by road comprised 57.7 million tonnes, which is 8.2 % less than in the corresponding period of the previous year. Transportation of national freights comprised 45 million tonnes, 12.5 % less than a year ago. Transportation of international freights accounted for 12.7 million tonnes – 11.3 % more. Of which export freight transport comprised 3.3 million tonnes, 9.5 % less. Transportation of import freight fell by 9.6 % and comprised 2.4 million tonnes of freight. Cross-trade and cabotage freights comprised 7 million tonnes, 36.7 % more than in the previous year. 76.8 % of total road freights were transportation for hire or reward. They fell by 4.6 %.

In nine months volume of wood chips loaded at ports increases by 44.7 %

In the nine months of 2024 the cargo loaded and unloaded at ports comprised 26 million tonnes, which is 11.2 % less than in the nine months of 2023. Freight turnover at Riga port was 13.1 million tonnes, 6.8 % less, at Ventspils port – 5.6 million tonnes or 32.2 % less, at Liepāja port – 5.2 million tonnes or 1.1 % more, but at minor ports – 2 million tonnes or 17.1 % more.

Freights loaded at ports comprised 19.4 million tonnes, which is 0.4 % more than in the nine months of 2023. Volume of freights in containers increased by 9.9 %, volume of grain and grain products – by 7.1 %, volume of timber – by 26.5 %, but of wood chips – by 44.7 %. In turn, volume of coals loaded reduced by 72.3 %, of roll on/roll off by 11.1 %, of oil products by 29.6 %.

6.6 million tonnes of freights were unloaded at ports, their volume fell by 33.8 %. Volume of unloaded freights in containers reduced by 20.5 %, of roll on/roll off by 12.1 %, of oil products by 8.6 %, of ore by 66.9 %, of coals by 78.3 %.

Riga International Airport loaded and unloaded 13.3 thousand tonnes of freights or 5.2 % less than in the nine months of 2023.
