Doctorate holders

Data on doctorate holders in Latvia are used to acquire internationally comparable information on doctorate holders in Latvia (aged under 70), which have acquired doctorate (in compliance with International Standardized Classification of Education – ISCED 6) in Latvia or abroad.

The information acquired within the framework of survey covered data on educational attainment of doctorate holders (time when and country where doctorate was acquired, field of doctorate), labour status and income.

Persons under the age of 70 who have obtained a doctorate in or outside Latvia.

Within the framework of the survey doctorate holders aged under 70 were surveyed.

Data were acquired with the help of sample survey "Careers of doctorate holders". Data thereof are extrapolated to the whole target population of the survey.

The following information acquisition methods have been used:

• questionnaires (sent and received by e-mail);
• phone interviews (interviewing with a printed questionnaire);
• face-to-face interviewing with a printed questionnaire (PAPI – paper and pencil interviewing).

Sample frame was formed of the following information sources:

• database of doctorate holders of Latvian Council of Science;
• Scientific institution register of the Ministry of Education and Science (list of persons employed in these institutions),
• database of the Academic information centre;
• various other information sources on the Internet.
