Data description
Requirements of the EU legislation stipulate that Agricultural Census in Member States shall be conducted every 10 years, while during the period between Censuses (from 2001 to 2009) a Farm Structure Survey shall be conducted once in two years. Latvian Farm Structure Survey was conducted in 2003, 2005 and 2007.

The data are acquired and compiled in line with the criteria stipulated by the Council Regulation (ECC) No 571/88 (of 29 February 1988) and amendments thereof.
Within the framework of the survey, information is acquired on agricultural holding, its owner and manager, land use, number of livestock, machinery available on the holding, manure storage facilities and irrigation methods, as well as labour force in agriculture.

Source data
Data source for the Farm Structure Survey is a sample-survey. Agricultural holdings are selected from the Statistical Farm Register. Data are collected in compliance with the CSB questionnaire "Farm Structure Survey".
Data collection
Sample size
The sample has been formed as stratified simple random sample. Holdings are stratified by their location (NUTS 3), type of farming and economic size.
In 2003 sample size comprised 49.6 thousand holdings.
In 2005 sample size comprised 60.0 thousand holdings.
In 2007 sample size comprised 58.0 thousand holdings.
Data compilation
Extrapolation of the data on the surveyed holdings to all agricultural holdings is based on the number of similar holdings represented by sampled holdings as well as actual response rate in each of the survey territories.
