Data description
Asylum seekers statistics is used to analyse trends in the number of asylum applications and decisions made, the age and sex structure of applicants, their citizenship and the status granted.

- Regulation (EC) No 862/2007 of the European Parliament and of the Council on Community statistics on migration and international protection and repealing Council Regulation (EEC) No 311/76 on the compilation of statistics on foreign workers
- Council Directive 2001/55/EC on minimum standards for giving temporary protection in the event of a mass influx of displaced persons and on measures promoting a balance of efforts between Member States in receiving such persons and bearing the consequences thereof. (From 2022, applicable to people from Ukraine seeking refuge.)

Eurostat (statistical office of the European Union) is responsible for publishing high-quality Europe-wide statistics and indicators that enable comparisons between countries and regions. Statistics is available in the Eurostat database, in section: Asylum.
Length of comparable time series
- Comparable data on first time asylum applicants are available from January 2023.
- Comparable data on first instance decisions granting temporary protection, refugee status or subsidiary protection status are available from 2022 Q1.
