Business demography indicators

Annual data on business demography provides information on the number of enterprise births, survivals and deaths in economic activity sectors, number of persons employed in these enterprises, rate of changes in the turnover and in the number of employed in the reference period.

Monthly data on business demography provides information on the number of enterprises and number of bankruptcies.

Annual data: all active enterprises of market sector.

Monthly data: legal unit.

Annual data: all active enterprises of market sector and activities performed by all active enterprises included in Sections B to S of the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities NACE Rev. 2.

Monthly data: legal units (excluding self-employed natural persons) included in the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities (NACE) Rev. 2, Sections B to S, except for Section O and Division S94.

• Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/1197 of 30 July 2020 laying down technical specifications and arrangements pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2019/2152 of the European Parliament and of the Council on European business statistics repealing 10 legal acts in the field of business statistics.

Eurostat publishes data on Business demography: 

• Annual data are available in Section Business demography: Structural business demography.
• Monthly data are available in Section Short-term business statistics/ Market economy: Business registration and bankruptcy.

• Comparable annual data are available since 2007.
• Comparable monthly data are available since 2015.
