7. Statistical processing (data source etc.)
Source data
- State statistical report Report regarding antenatal care, abortions and contraception.
- Data on childbirths for calculating the total number of pregnancies and data on the number of live births for calculating the indicators were taken from the Medical Birth register.
- Data on ectopic pregnancies for calculating the total number of pregnancies were taken from a state statistical report Report of hospital work.
Data collection
The method for collecting information is a full survey. All outpatient and inpatient medical treatment institutions providing antenatal care and termination of pregnancy (abortion) registered in the territory of Latvia submit the report.
The Medical Birth register information system records data on all newborns born in medical treatment institutions in Latvia, as well as out-of-hospital births (including planned home births).
The data on abortions are broken down by statistical regions of Latvia according to the code of the medical treatment institution (ATVK).
Data compilation
The data are calculated by region using the average number of women (15-49 years), the number of live births, and the proportion of all abortions or pregnancies recorded in antenatal care, broken down by statistical region.
Information on antenatal care is submitted by gynaecologists – obstetricians who provide care for pregnant women. If a pregnant woman visits both a family doctor and a gynecologist, the information is provided only by the gynecologist in order to avoid duplication of information. The family doctor and midwife shall only complete in cases where they provide full care to the pregnant woman without the involvement of a gynaecologist.
