Data description
The balance of production and consumption of livestock products is used to develop agricultural policy, study and analyse market trends, and identify key relations and correlations among quantities produced, imported, used domestically, exported as well as stocks.

Statistical unit
Meat and meat product balances: economically active trader or agricultural holding engaged in production, processing, or trade of meat.
Milk and milk product balances: economically active trader or agricultural holding engaged in production, processing, or trade of milk.
Egg and egg product balances: economically active trader or agricultural holding engaged in production, processing, or trade of eggs.
Statistical population
Enterprises engaged in production, processing and trade of milk, meat and eggs.

Coherence- cross domain
The foreign trade information regarding livestock product production and consumption balances is converted into raw material (meat, milk, egg) equivalent based on the Combined Nomenclature codes and corresponding conversion factors. The balance data are coherent with agricultural, processing, and trade data.

- Volume produced is estimated based on the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) data on the volume produced in year N.
- Imports and exports are estimated based on the CSB information on the volume of imports in year N in breakdown by country (CSB questionnaires Report on Trade Between the Member States of the European Union (Arrivals–Intrastat–1A) and Report on Trade Between the Member States of the European Union (Arrivals–Intrastat–1B)) and CSB information on volume of exports in year N (CSB questionnaires Report on Trade Between the Member States of the European Union (Dispatches–Intrastat–2A) and Report on Trade Between Member States of the European Union (Dispatches–Intrastat–2B)).
- Stock:
Stock in meat and meat product balances is estimated based on the information in Questionnaire Regarding Meat (2) attached to the Cabinet Regulation No 841 Procedures for the Gathering and Compiling Information Regarding Prices and Trading Volumes of Agricultural Products in a Specific Reporting Period of 1 November 2011;
Stock in milk and milk product balances is estimated based on the Latvian Central Union of Dairy Farmers data;
Stock in egg and egg product balances is estimated based on the information in Questionnaire Regarding Hen Eggs (2) attached to the Cabinet Regulation No 841 Procedures for the Gathering and Compiling Information Regarding Prices and Trading Volumes of Agricultural Products in a Specific Reporting Period of 1 November 2011.
- Milk used for animal feed is estimated based on the data in CSB questionnaire Livestock Production (3-LS) (available in Latvian).
- Estimates made by experts.

Data collection
The data are collected by the RSS itself by compiling information submitted via questionnaires attached to the Cabinet Regulation No 841 Procedures for the Gathering and Compiling Information Regarding Prices and Trading Volumes of Agricultural Products in a Specific Reporting Period of 1 November 2011 as well as using agricultural and foreign trade statistics compiled by the CSB and information compiled by the Latvian Central Union of Dairy Farmers.
Data compilation
Milk, meat, egg and product thereof production and consumption balance indicators are resulting from the estimates made based on the data in the above data sources and in compliance with the Statistical Requirements Compendium developed by the European Commission in line with the Community statistics programme.
