Data description
The Continuing Vocational Training Survey (CVTS) collects information on enterprises’ investment in the continuing vocational training of their staff. Continuing vocational training (CVT) refers to education or training measures or activities which are financed in total or at least partly by the enterprise (directly or indirectly). Part financing could include the use of working time for the training activity as well as the financing of training equipment.
The CVTS aims at producing statistics for training strategy implemented in enterprises by developing skills of employees. Information is collected on the access of persons employed in enterprises to vocational training, which includes both internal and external courses, as well as initial vocational training, types of training, vocational training costs, time spent on CVT courses, factors limiting CVT provision, etc.
The data are published in summaries by economic activity and size of enterprise and are used to analyse enterprise investment in vocational training, which plays an important role in the progress of the labour market, employment, enterprise competitiveness at national and European level.
The main breakdowns in which it is necessary to obtain estimates (proportion only is published) for the target population are:
- total for country;
- economic activity of an enterprise (based on NACE Rev. 2) in 5 groups;
- size group of an enterprise (number of persons employed): 10–49, 50–249, 250 and more.

Data collection
Year | Gross sample | Net sample |
2020 | 10 069 | 2 695 |
2015 | 10 003 | 2 940 |
2010 | 9 293 | 3 287 |
Data compilation
The design weights, that are the inverses of the inclusion probabilities, were calculated according to the sample design, with all enterprises within the same stratum having equal design weights.
Outliers were calculated in groups of stratum, using distance method.
The design weights were adjusted using the data of response level in each stratum. Under-coverage errors were calculated, using information from actual target population. Over-coverage errors were estimated using sample information.
Horvitz-Thompson estimators are used, where final weights are design weights corrected as mentioned above.
Accuracy requirements: according to the requirements of Commission Regulation No 822/2010 on statistics relating to vocational training in enterprises.
