5. Comparability
Comparability - geographical
Eurostat in its database publishes data on forest areas in EU countries in the section: Agriculture, forestry and fisheries / Forestry / Forestry resources / Area of wooded land (source: FAO - FE). The data are from forest inventories carried out by the State Forest Service in Latvia.
Forest according to the national definition includes:
- forest stands, degraded stands, burns, windfalls, clearings.
Forest according to the international definition includes:
- forest stands, degraded stands, burns, windstorms, clearings, clearings and area under forest infrastructure.
Length of comparable time series
Due to the implementation of the administrative-territorial reform in 2020, data from 2021 onwards are not comparable with previous periods. Therefore, the data where a break in the time series occurred are stored in two tables - pre-reform and post-reform.
Data are available:
- Inventoried forest areas and standing timber by main tree species in regions, cities, towns, municipalities and rural territories - since 2013;
- Distribution of inventoried forest land areas by land categories in regions, cities, municipalities, towns and rural territories (ha) - since 2009.

7. Statistical processing (data source etc.)
Source data
Forest inventory data, as the content is defined in the Cabinet Regulation No 384 Regulations Regarding Forest Inventory and Circulation of Information of the State Forest Register of 21 June 2016.
Data collection
The data are collected during the forest inventory. The Forest Law stipulates that the forest owners or legal possessors must ensure that a first forest inventory is carried out on the property or legal possession and the data must be submitted to the State Forest Service, which stores them in the national information system - the State Forest Register.
Forest inventories shall be carried out by persons certified by an accredited conformity assessment body and whose professional activities are covered by civil liability insurance.
The main purpose of a forest inventory is to obtain information on the forest. A valid forest inventory is one of the prerequisites for the planned felling of trees in a forest.
Data compilation
The State Forest Service is obliged in accordance with the Cabinet Regulation No 384 "Regulations Regarding Forest Inventory and Circulation of Information of the State Forest Register" of 21 June 2016 to evaluate the forest inventory within one month after receiving it and make a decision on registration of the forest inventory data in the State Information System - State Forest Register or on refusal of registration if the submitted forest inventory data do not comply with the requirements of these Regulations.
