Retail trade turnover grew by 2.9 % in January

Calendar adjusted data (at constant prices) compiled by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) show that, compared to January 2022, in January 2023 total retail trade turnover rose by 2.9 %. Turnover of retail trade in food products declined by 3.2 %. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 5.7 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel- by 8.5 %.

As compared to January 2022, the largest turnover rise was registered in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (23.2 %) and retail sale of hardware, instruments, construction materials and sanitary equipment (14.3 %). Turnover drop was registered in retail sale in non-specialised stores selling mainly non-food products (7.6 %) and retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (4.5 %).

Total retail trade turnover at current prices increased by 20.4 % (not taking into account the calendar influence).

Compared to December 2022, the total turnover of retail trade enterprises in January 2023 increased by 1.4 %, according to seasonally adjusted data at constant prices. Turnover of retail trade in food products grew by 2.7%. Retail trade in non-food products (except for retail sale of automotive fuel) increased by 1.6 %, but turnover of retail sale of automotive fuel – reduced by 1.4 %.

As compared to the previous month, the most notable turnover rise was registered in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (14.8 %), retail sale in stalls or markets (10.4 %) and retail sale of electrical household appliances in specialised stores (5.6 %). The largest turnover drop was observed in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods (9.2 %), retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods (4.9 %) and retail sale of pharmaceutical and medical goods (3.3 %).

Compared to December, in January 2023 the total retail trade turnover at current prices (not taking into account seasonality) decreased by 16.6 %.

Data published might be revised in the following months if additional information will be obtained from stores.

According to methodology of the survey, data on the total net turnover of enterprises also include transactions outside main activity. In some cases these transactions (e.g., wholesale trade) may significantly affect turnover changes in the sector. Total turnover, according to the main activity of enterprises, also includes income from e-commerce.
