In March foreign trade turnover of Latvia was 15.8 % larger than a year ago
Provisional data of the Central Statistical Bureau show that in March 2021 the foreign trade turnover of Latvia amounted to EUR 2.84 billion, which at current prices was 15.8 % larger than a year ago, of which the exports value of goods was 20.6 % higher, but imports value of goods – 11.9 % higher. In March Latvia exported goods in the amount of EUR 1.34 billion, but imported – in the amount of EUR 1.5 billion. Compared to March 2020, foreign trade balance has improved as exports in total foreign trade amount increased from 45.3 % to 47.1 %.
During the first quarter of this year foreign trade turnover of Latvia at current prices reached EUR 7.38 billion – EUR 395.9 million or 5.7 % more than in the corresponding period of 2020. The exports value constituted EUR 3.55 billion (a growth of EUR 282.5 million or 8.6 %), whereas the imports value comprised EUR 3.83 billion (a rise of EUR 113.4 million or 3 %).
Calendar and seasonally adjusted data show that, compared to March 2020, in March 2021 the exports value at current prices went up by 18 %, but the imports value – by 8.5 %, whereas, compared to the previous month, the exports value went up by 3.7 %, but the imports value – by 4.6 %.
Main changes in exports in March 2021, compared to March 2020:
- exports of wood and articles of wood up by EUR 64 million or 35 %;
- exports of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment up by EUR 43.7 million or 24.3 %;
- exports of base metals and articles of base metals up by EUR 26.1 million or 24 %;
- exports of products of the chemical and allied industries up by EUR 24.8 million or 26.3 %;
- exports of mineral products up by EUR 21.7 million or 47.5 %.
Main changes in imports in March 2021, compared to March 2020:
- imports of machinery and mechanical appliances; electrical equipment up by EUR 59.1 million or 21.6 %;
- imports of base metals and articles of base metals up by EUR 25.1 million or 23.8 %;
- imports of wood and articles of wood up by EUR 21 million or 42.8 %;
- imports of vehicles and associated transport equipment up by EUR 20.1 million or 16.7 %;
- imports of prepared foodstuffs down by EUR 23.4 million or 17.1 %.
In March, the main export partners of Latvia in trade with EU countries were Lithuania (18.2 % of total exports), Estonia (10.8 %), Germany (7.2 %) and Sweden (5.7 %), whereas the main import partners were Lithuania (18.2 % of total imports), Germany (11.6 %), Poland (10.7 %) and Estonia (8.3 %). Russian Federation was the main export partner in trade with third countries; its share in total Latvian exports in March accounted for 7.4 %, whereas in imports – for 5.6 %.
In March 2021, compared to March 2020, share of the European Union countries in total exports value increased by 1.8 percentage points, but in total imports value – fell by 1.2 percentage points. Share of CIS countries in exports fell by 1.5 percentage points, but in imports – rose by 0.8 percentage points.

In March 2021 foreign trade balance of Latvia was positive with 117 partner countries, as exports value of goods exceeded imports value of goods. It was negative in trade with 44 countries.

Compared to March 2020, in March 2021 imports of goods from the United Kingdom fell by EUR 15.3 million or 51.6 %. Drop was observed in all main foreign trade groups of commodities. But, compared to the month before, imports from the United Kingdom increased by EUR 3.8 million or 35.7 % (rise was observed in all main groups of commodities).
The rise in exports of mineral fuels, mineral oils and products of their distillation in March 2021, as compared to March 2020, was mostly facilitated by an increase in exports of electricity by EUR 7.4 million or 2.1 time. While exports of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages reduced, as exports of spirits obtained by distilling grape wine or grape marc fell by EUR 1.9 million or 28.2 %.

The rise in imports of iron and steel in March 2021, as compared to March 2020, was mostly facilitated by an increase in imports of flat-rolled products of iron or non-alloy steel by EUR 11.1 million or 47.5 %. In turn, reduction in imports of pharmaceutical products was mostly influenced by decrease in imports of medicines by EUR 13.8 million or 22.2 %.
Rise in imports of miscellaneous chemical products in March 2021, as compared to a month before, was mostly facilitated by an increase in imports of herbicides, anti-sprouting products and plant-growth regulators by EUR 10.9 million.
