COVID-19 impact: unemployment rate

Results of the Labour Force Survey conducted by the Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia (CSB) show that in December 2022 actual unemployment rate in Latvia accounted for 7.1 %, and compared to November it has increased by 0.2 percentage points.

Unemployment rate among males grew by 0.4 percentage points and reached 7.8 %, while among females it did not change and constituted 6.4 %.

The unemployment rate registered with the State Employment Agency (SEA) constituted 6.1 % and has grown by 0.2 percentage points since November. Compared to December 2021, actual unemployment rate has gone down by 0.3 percentage points and registered by 0.6 percentage points.

In December 2022 there were 68.8 thousand unemployed persons in Latvia (31.2 thousand females and 37.6 thousand males), which is 1.6 thousand more than in November 2022 and equal to the number recorded in December 2021. Over the month, the number of unemployed males grew by 1.9 thousand and of unemployed females dropped by 0.3 thousand.

The SEA calculates registered unemployment rate by using own data on the registered unemployed persons and CSB data on active population (employed and unemployed persons) of working age. The actual unemployment rate is estimated based on not adjusted monthly survey results.
